Ford 9"

Hey everybody, I was wondering something...mostly need help with this question though. I am getting a Ford 9 inch Raer-end out of a 1960-something Ford Truck...what all would I have to do to get this baby in my 1996 Z28? Anyone know of a website where they converted on of these over to fit in the 4th gen cars...or anything like that? I know that of course the brakes will go on (Disc brakes)...but what about getting rid of the ABS? Also, one of my main questions is how the hell is it going to actually go into the Bunny? Do the U-Joints fit right up next to each other or what? I really wanted to know..I'm gettin it from a friend and he wants 75 bucks for the whole thing (case, gears, crush sleeves, everything thats already in it). Any help would be awesome...even if someone recommened a book! Thanks!

I orignially posted this on the LT1 section cause I forgot that there was a driveline section now! oops! sorry guys!

There is alot more to it then that!!

Your brakes will not just bolt up to it..

You will need to make shock mounts, Tq arm mount, controll arm mounts.

The rear will need to be narrowed, Custom axles etc...

WOnt happen, you need brackets and all sorts of stuff. Just break down and buy a housing from Moser or Currie. Put simply, there is no cheap way to have a 9 inch.....PERIOD

Yea I knew it wasnt simple...cant you take off all those brakets though and weld them on to the ford rear-end? I forgot about narrowing the rear too! I'm not looking for a cheap rebuild or anything like that...I just hate to see and 9 inch go to the junk yard. But honestly, how much would narrowing and getting somone to tig weld the brackets and stuff in?

I kinda figured that with all of the other mods, this was going to be about an easy 1200...but then I forgot about the brakets, narrowing and I have a guy that can do custom axles for me. Tnanks for everyones input!

i would take the center section out of the rear and save it. then buy a moser housing and axles and use the center section. If you need ABS then look for my post in this section on how to keep it.

Well, yesterday...I couldn't see the rear end go. So we took it out along with the top load tranny. Ford did some pretty crazy stuff back in the 60s...I never knew that they had inspection plates under neath were the bell housing is. Pretty cool learning about that old stuff . But anyway, yea we took it out and kept the rear end. So all I have to do is get a moser housing...and what kind of axels? Somone mentioned on custon axles and I dont see exactly why? Maybe I need to look more into this whole set-up. What exactly is the center section? I thought I would keep the housing and all that and work on the axles somehow and change out everything I needed to in the middle. Also what I notice was that it doesnt have a pumkin cover! What do I do about that?? Thanks for the help Z95m6! I don't want ABS...it sucks!

Moser offers an option to keep your abs with a 9 inch. At least if you have TCS, didn't ask about non-TCS cause I don't have that.

9" rears have a dropout center section so there is no need for a "pumpkin cover". look at the front side of the rear, see all the bolts? thats the center section,it houses the ring/pinion/diff.

you will have to pull the axles out before you can remove the center section.

All your going to keep is the Pumpkin........You need to order a complete Moser 9" housing with axles, bearings, spacers for the brakes. Moser has this all in one set. All you do is call Moser and tell them you have the 3rd member( pumpkin) and what spline your carrier is....stock for most likley will be either a 28 or 31 spline and they will send you everthing you need ready to go for like $800-$900. Its really simple. just call moser tech support and they will walk you through it on how and waht to order!!
And the pumkin is also the rear cover all in one so you know.

Thanks guys! I called moser and they said to just take out the 3rd member (center section) and then they have a bolt on package with 33 spline axles, hubs and all that other stuff for 920 bucks! Looks like the bunnys got a 9inch now! Thank you for all of your help! I'll be checking the message boards for the abs stuff cause I hate abs and no longer want them. But thanks for all the help!

Just tie up the rear ABS sensor with a zip under the car and then remove the bulb from the dash...Or there is a post about splicing wires from the pcm into the rear abs and bla bla bla..... Its easier to pull the bulb!!

Well that ford centersection won't work because it is more than likely 28 spline or 31 at best so it won't work with 33 spline axles unless you change the differential.

I thought I said this allready but here I go again..........

Count the splines in the Center section where the axles go..

It will be either 28 or 31 splines IF it is a factory ford 9" section

Moser has 28 and 31 spline axles offered for there COMPLETE F -body housing kits that they told you about.

ITS NOT THAT HARD !!
