flywheel info
I was just wondering if a T56 tranny needs a T56 specific flywheel. I just had some work done on my car, and the guy did not use a t56 flywheel, he put a much larger flywheel on it. I had some one tell me I needed to replace that as well as the clutch he installed (a custom made, springless kevlar clutch. it's really hard to put in reverse and first, and sometimes second). I just wanted to know before I drop 800+ bucks on a clutch and flywheel. thanks
Re: flywheel info
A stock LT1 motor is externally balanced, so the flywheel needs to be balanced to match a LT1 flywheel. The flywheel is also 153 tooth, to properly match up to the starter. There are several aftermarket flywheels out there (McLeod, Centerforce, SLP) that work in the LT1 application.
Re: flywheel info
Aside from the balancing issue, no. People put T56s from LT1s behind SBCs. If it's hard to get into gears it's usually a problem with the clutch not fully disengaging. Was this a pro installation or was it more of a hack job do you think?
Re: flywheel info
well, he's got a shop, seemed like a professonal. I know quite a bit about my car.but, I don't install engines everyday, so between that and my busy schedule, I figured I'd better let a pro do it. I found out a week into the project that I knew more about my car than he did, and HE was the one taking my car appart. it's a long story, but my car is very hard to get into first, third sometimes fifth and extremely hard to get into reverse. A guy told me if I didn't get my clutch and flywheel fixed, it'd burn out my tranny. I left a thread in the advanced engine tech that explains more of my ordeal. lets just say I paid a total of 12k to get a f**k job.
