Easiest way to check which gear ratio i have?

My rpo says GU2 but with the rpms im tuning and how well my car did at the track the other day says i have 3.23's...my thinking is if i pop the rear cover and it has the reluctor ring ive got 3.23's or higher...if it doesnt have the ring ive got 2.73's is this the easiest most accurate way to do this?

thanks
Bill

If you have the 1st gear selection on the shifter it is 3:23, if not 2:73's. Thats assuming the rear is stock.

If you are going to pull the cover off, GM gears will be marked (or just count the teeth). You can also count the number of rotations of the driveshaft to one rotation of the rear wheel without pulling the rear cover off.

Another easy way that gives a good idea is to put the trans in drive not OD, then drive up to 70mph and if the rpms are around 2700 you have 2.73's- 3200 3.23's- 3700 3.73's. This is a rough estimate but it will givve you a idea. Good luck.

No. If your gears are still stock though you have 3:42's. All 94-02 M6 cars came with 3:42's.

What are your rpms in 6th gear at 70mph? When I had 3:42's it was around 1900-2000 rpms if I remember right. Now with 4:10's it's around 2200-2300. Try that and see what it's closest too, it should give you a pretty good idea.

The only way to know for sure what gears you have is to pull the cover off and count the number of teeth. Count the number of teeth on the ring and then count the number of teeth on the pinion and divide the number on the ring by the number on the pinion. For example, i have 37 teeth on my ring and 9 teeth on my pinion that comes out to equal 4.11.
