Easier on trans: WOT shifts vs. part throttle

I thought I heard somewhere that flooring it really doesnt put a lot of stress on the trans, or ate leaste not as much as part throttle shifts. I am talking aout an A4. Also, does it do harm to shift it manually, and or leave it in 3 0r 2 when driving city and letting the trans slow you down after you let off the gas (i.e when all the exhaust popping starts)
