dumb six-speed question...

when do you know its time to change fluid in an m6 tranny? how often should you change it. and can it be checked? i don't see anything obvious like a dipstick tube like auto transmissions have. thanks in advance.

Re: dumb six-speed question...

I think my Haynes manual says to change it every 10,000 miles or so? 15,000 probably wouldn't hurt but it depends on how you drive I guess. There's 2 plugs in the tranny, one for filling and checking the level and the other is the drain plug. I don't quite remember but I wanna say the fill is on the driver's side and the drain is on the passenger side on my '96 and the only way to really check the condition of the fluid is to drain it so you might as well just change it if you don't know when it was done last. Hope this helps some.

No need to change it every 15K. 50K miles would be fine. I usually change it everytime I have the tranny out (clutch replacement). No real need to check the fluid level either unless you have a leak. Fluid level should be even with the bottom of the fill hole located in the side of the tranny.

Re: dumb six-speed question...

well, the reason i ask is that when i am sitting at a light trying to go between 1st and 2nd, it doesn't wanna go into 2nd until i am rolling. so i figured i'd try this first. also, it goes into gear kinda hard at times.

That doesn't sound too unusual to me. Mine is hard to get in gear quite often. Release the clutch and let the innards spin and it will probably go. If not try again.
