Driveshaft ID

How do I identify an aluminum driveshaft by looking at it? The reason I ask is, I just bought an LS1 driveshaft from Ebay. Before it got here, I was changing my trans mount and noticed the driveshaft was a clean silver color while the U-joints had the rusty look. When I recieved my LS1 shaft in the mail, it looked almost identical. Did I buy something I didn't need? Thanks.

Re: Driveshaft ID

Sounds like you already have a Aluminum Dr Shaft and you just wasted your money.

Re: Driveshaft ID

Hopefully the one already in the car is a 1LE which is stronger than the LS1 shaft.

Re: Driveshaft ID

Is it going to be either an 1LE or an LS1? I'm guessing there's no such thing as an LT1 aluminum driveshaft so that kind of narrows it down, huh? How can I tell for sure which one I have? Did any 96s come from the factory with aluminum?

1LE & LT1 Aluminum Dr Shafts are one and the same 2 3/4' Dia.
LS1 Aluminum Dr Shafts are 3 " Dia.

Don't let the size fool ya though. The LS1 shafts use a thinner gauge of aluminum tubing. Look closely and you can see the thickness HERE
