Does a new 3000rpm stall converter require tuning?

I just installed a new transmission with a Street Edge 3000rpm stall converter. Before it would shift pretty hard through all the gears. Now it feels like its shifting into 2nd a lot earlier and I can barely tell that its shifting. When I floor it, it also doesnt feel like it pulls as good as it used to. Also I cant even tell if the converter is locking up or not, it feels VERY weird

Does a new high stall converter require tuning or is my trans having problems?

Re: Does a new 3000rpm stall converter require tuning?

I just recently installed a newly built trans, and a Street Edge 3000 rpm converter as well.

It does take more throttle to get the car moving, and the shifts feel softer because the converter is looser. The shifts should actually feel like it's late (higher RPM) than before. Comparing the throttle it took to get the car moving before to how it is now, the shifts seem later than before because of the required extra throttle and higher RPM that the engine runs at because of the looser converter.

Is the trans you installed a stock unit, or does it have a shift kit or something in it?

Some people end up bumping the shift pressures in the tune, so that they get some of the "snap" back on the shifts.

For me, when the PCM commands lockup (~45 MPH at low TPS%) the RPMs drop considerably. Enough that it feels like a 5th gear to be honest. Like a 1200 RPM drop.

Have you verified to make sure you have enough fluid in there? If it's low, it's going to feel really strange.

I know that mine also felt extremely strange at first, it took some getting used to, but I'm pretty well used to it now.

Re: Does a new 3000rpm stall converter require tuning?

The transmission was built a little stronger than stock, the only thing I opted to leave out was the hardened input shaft & drum. I got the kevlar 2-4 band, 8 count 3-4 clutches, hardened sun shell and he made some other modifications that were over my head :P

The transmission was a bit low on fluid, it showed full when I warmed it up for the first time, but after driving it a while and checked it again, I was about a quart low.

When I first had the car tuned, I had to get the shift point set real low to compensate for the slipping transmission. It would bounce the rev limiter @ 6200 when the shift points were set to 5700.

I drove around with it with datamaster hooked up and it seems normal, I just never had a converter stall this high before.

Thanks for the response.
