Make sure your pan is clean and only use a light amount of gasket sealer. Also be sure and NOT tighten the bolts down too much as to bend/warp the pan. That will make it leak also.

I use RTV just to set the gasket. It isn't needed for sealing.

Before you go to put your filter in,, put a little bit of RTV around the pan place your gasket and leave it sit for a bit, that way when you are replacing the pan the gasket is easier to keep in position. I will even put someof the pan bolts in the holes to keep the gasket in position.

I think the biggest mistake most people make is over tightening the bolts.

I also work my way with the bolts from one side to the other to not have a "wrinkle" in the gasket.

use a 1/4" ratchet with an extension when tightening the pan to prevent overtightening and just snug down with moderate torque. The small size of the ratchet will help pervent overtorque. As for sealant, I dont use any and i work in a tranny shop. all that does is lube the gasket to spit it out. Get yourself a quality gasket for starters, not that thin cork one. After about a 1/2 dozen heat cycles, get under there again and just snug up the bolts and you're done.
