do it myself?

Hello all, I was just wondering how difficult/easy is it to replace the slave cylinder on a 96 lt1 6 speed. I believe mine went out because there is no clutch pedal pressure, a drop in the master cylinder fluid level, and a large leak under my car. So if someone could help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank u.

Re: do it myself?

When I had a leak I seem to remember it was my clutch master cylinder leaking. I had a whole spare system so I just decided to swap it all out. It is very difficult to un bolt and bolt in the master cylinder just because there is no space to work.

That said if you are sure it is your slave leaking all you have to do is jack up the car, unbolt the slave on the side of the tranny, push out the roll pin to disconnect the slave from the line, put the new one on the line, fill, bleed and bolt up the slave to the tranny. I say go for it!

To bleed the system on an LT1 you unbolt the slave from the tranny (it will already be unbolted in your case of course). have someone unscrew the reservoir cap, push once on the piston in the slave on the palm of your hand, keep it held in and have your helper screw the cap back on. Then pump, pump and pump some more - 100 times to be safe with the line pointing up to push all the bubbles out. Then bolt the slave back on and see how well it goes into gear. If it doesn't go in well you need to bleed it more.

The new slave will go on just as the old one comes off. You just push the line onto the slave (make sure you have your o ring on) and push the pin back through into the groove on the line.

My Chiltons shows 15 lb-ft for the "clutch actuator cylinder nuts".

Make sure you keep the plastic cap on the end of the slave, to bleed I pumped probably 20 times and it did the job
