Do i need a rebuild?
Do i need a rebuild?
I've got a 4l60e with 136000 miles on it. I wanted to install a shift kit but low and behold the tranny place say i need a rebuild
the only thing i can find that is wrong with it is that it won't hold gears when manual shifting. ex if i let off the gas in 1st at 3000 rpms it'll drop right back down to 1000. Everything shifts fine when in D so i'm kinda confused any one delt with something like this before?

Re: Do i need a rebuild?
sounds like you overrun clutches are gone by the description above.. And with that many mile and the fact that it is already showing clutch wear, you shouldn't throw the shift kit in or your tranny is sure to go out quickly.. I would agree with the shop that you should have it rebuilt especially if you want to mod it...
Re: Do i need a rebuild?
Either over-run clutches are cooked, or the lugs on the over-run clutch hub are broken. Look carefully before settling on a place to build your '60E. Most "general transmission shops" fall way short when trying to build one for a performance application. You might want to search for a shop who specializes in racing / performance 4L60E's. Some even do race rebuilds for around the same price as what many "generic shops" charge for a base rebuild.

I have the exact same problem. Mine came after the TG kit
well worth it though man i loved breaking the drag radials loose on the 1-2, 2-3 shifts. Mine happened all of a sudden, WOT and pop heard something after that she drops right down to idle when off throttle.
Tell me more about this over-run clutch hub, and what it does/hurts when it is broken. I am going to finish this transmission off soon--spraying this spring. Just wondering how bad it will be to spray on it--just don't want to destroy hardparts that I could possibly use in the re-build. And i will be droping you a line Frank when it's time.
If let's say you had a transmission that has no 2nd or 4th gear what would be the minimum things you should replace? I am in posession of a 4l60e i got for dirt cheap that has no 2nd of 4th gear and I want to tinker with it and see what i can do with it. I just want to learn a few things on how to rebuild a transmission, what would you suggest i do? Any type of instructional books/videos that could help me learn a thing or two. Not looking to become a great builder, more just familiaze myself with everything and see if i can't get it to work when i'm done.

Like I said this is the basics there are more things out there too, maybe Frank has some more insight into it.
