Question Different gears?

I've posted a lot about my tranny woes and im well on the way to taking care of that, but im kinda confused on something.Someone told me to check in the glove box for the code that would tell me what gears my car had and i did supposedly it came with 3.23's but hes the problem on the maiden run to disaster that baked my tranny the car pulled way harder than i thought it would and turned up really quick now the car only has first and third.I've taken it out since then and running 60 in third(with some tlc) it turns somewhere between 3100 and 3300 rpms ive tried the calculator but im kinda worried its idiot proof .Any ideas as to what gears i might have in my car ive got all the reciepts from the previouse owner and there is one for a rear end change but it doesent specify what gears where put back in?

Re: Different gears?

Yeah I have 4:10/11's and I think that is the RPM I would be around. I think mine may a little lower though. There is a trick though to finding out what gears you have in your rear. Get the car up on jacks and make a mark on the wheel and driveshaft with an ink pen. Have somebody underneath watching the mark on the driveshaft. If you spin the rear wheels 1 complete revolution you will get your gear ratio from looking at the driveshaft.

For instance my car when I bought it was listed ashaving 3:73's. Well I figured after driving it that it may just have 4:10's. I had my buddy get under the car and I spun the wheel 1 time and he counted up to four on the mark and just about a tenth of a turn on the driveshaft. Hope this helps.

Re: Different gears?

If you got 3100-3300 at 74 mph then you have 3.23 gears. At 76 mph in third gear, the RPM matches the ratio of the gear.

Second way is to do what was said.

Third and best way is to pull the cover and count the teeth.

I believe that's what I spun at 60 with my 4.10's

What size tire do you have?

Re: Different gears?

Just in case the gears weren't swapped out by the previous owner...you can go by these codes. They might on the sticker in the glove box, or driver's door.

2.73 (GU2)
3.23 (GU5)
3.42 (GU6)
