difference b/t 4l60e's
difference b/t 4l60e's
I have a 97 SS and the tranny is pretty much toast. I have a new tranny(4l60e) from a 94Z and was told that as it sits it will not work with the 97.
question 1....Will it bolt up and work?
question 2....Can I make it work?
question 3....would it be cheaper to have the original one rebuilt?
I am more of a second gen guy (owned 4) so a lot of this newer stuff is greek to me. I can take pictures and email them but I do not see how to attach in this forum. TIA

Re: difference b/t 4l60e's
Get yours rebuilt by someone who knows what they're doing, otherwise you are wasting your time. You need to find someone who KNOWS 700R4s/4L60Es, not someone who KNOWS transmissions in general. I did alot of research and ended up going with CPT (link in sig), and I'm very satisfied with mine. Shifts are hard and crisp, and no issues whatsoever.
Re: difference b/t 4l60e's
I know of a reputable shop (2 in fact) that deal with the 4l60e's. I wanted to go in there with some information and not sound like a complete fool. If it was a simple "change the tailshaft" or "some different wiring"..or something I go with the free one I have. It sounds like pretty much what I thought, rebuild the 97 4l60e and sell the 94 one. Thanks guys, unless anyone else has anything to add?
Re: difference b/t 4l60e's
I have a similar question. I read a thread from November of 2004, where the PWM was discussed: http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...up+differences
I just got a trans built for my car, and it happens to be a 94 transmission. The builder told me that the valve body came from a 96 transmission. The trans does have a shift kit (reprogramming kit) installed, with a 3000 RPM stall speed converter. When we went to install it, we realized that the inspection plate from my 96 trans would not fit, the tailshaft housing is different, and the linkage connector on the side of the trans is different. We swapped the tailshaft housing over, swapped the linkage connector over, and the car seems to be driving fine.
In the thread I noted above, one person mentioned that when you install a shift kit, it disables the PWM solenoid, making it like the earlier style on/off TCC lockup.
My particular transmission is also setup for vacuum modulation, I don't know if this will have any bearing on it either.
Should I be concerned that the transmission came from a 1994, but has a newer style valvebody on it?
