Did I do the pinion seal correctly?
Did I do the pinion seal correctly?
OK, I searched for this already and came up different answers. This is what I did. I dropped the driveshaft and torque arm, removed the nut (which was not on very tight), removed the ?yolk? (which was not on very tight either), pryed off the old seal, tapped on the new one, oiled the seal, applied non hardening sealer to the splines, slipped the yolk on, then the washer, and tighted the nut back to original location (based on number of threads exposed on pinion shaft before removing the nut) and drove it around with no noise or leak so far. This was how it is said to do in the Chiltons manual. Did I screw this up? I don't want my diff to go out all of a sudden with my kids in the car. What do you guys think? BTW, I did this because I had an oil leak, not bad enough to hit the ground, but enough to sling the underside of the car. Thanks.

the pinion nut should be very tight. the specs would be for inch/lbs required to rotate the pinion with the carrier removed. its kind of a feel thing once you've done a few.
