Detroit Locker? Pros and Cons
Detroit Locker? Pros and Cons
After 7 years my Pro Auburn is starting to fail. I have experience with both Eaton and Auburn, but I see that Detroit Locker has an application for our 10 bolts. All are similarly priced, so aside from the noise around corners why wouldn't I want to use the Detroit Locker? I only drive the car about 4000 miles a year and race when I can. I know that a 12 bolt or a 9" would be better, but my 10 bolt has lasted for 10 years with no problems other than the limited slip unit, so this fits my budget right now. Thanks for all inputs...

Re: Detroit Locker? Pros and Cons
I drove my locker on the street for over a year.. W/ no negative problem's other than those mentioned.. I barely hear the clicking while turning..
Re: Detroit Locker? Pros and Cons
I depends how you drive your car on the street. It would be completely unsuitable for me, as I like to accelerate out of corners! It functions like a spool when locked. Unless you are very skilled, you better not try to accelerate out of a corner with it and the same applies to the third power on a slippery surface. Can you say "instant oversteer"?
OTOH, if your performance driving is all in a straight line, it's super. The "clunk" bothers some people more than others. It's completely unacceptable to me. YMMV.

Re: Detroit Locker? Pros and Cons
Thanks guys...I'm still up in the air between an Eaton and the Locker. I haven't seen many people talk about using the Locker in their 10 bolts so I thought I'd ask. I survived using an Eaton with 800lb preload springs in my old Chevelle (acted like a spool) so I thought I'd check into the Detroit Locker...
Steve, was yours in a 10 bolt or a 9"?

Re: Detroit Locker? Pros and Cons
Rich, I'm embarrased to say that I never weighed the Chevelle, It was a 1972 Malibu 70,000 original miles!! with a leaned on ZZ4 making 435 fwhp on 92 pump gas and had A/C, column shift, bench seat, Moser 12 bolt w/ 4.10s and the Eaton w/ 800lb springs...absolutely loved the car..original flame orange metallic paint (fairly rare paint since I've only seen one other one) unrestored. Mint original vinyl top and interior..I get choked up when I talk about it. It ran 12.30s at 108 on BFG DRs on steel ralleys and never got over 180 degrees. Huge sleeper. Sold it 2 years ago to buy our new house...The worst part is that some old rich guy bought it and has put about 1000 miles on it and has detuned everything because it scared him too much. I see it every now and then...you will be mine oh yes...you will....
