Dangers of testing w/ rear wheels off the ground

I have an annoying rattling problem at around 1000-1300 rpm. It can't be heard until I let the clutch all the way out. Its audible inside and outside the car when driving. Instead of throwing parts at it, I want to crawl under the car and try and listen for the noise. I'm not going to be spinning the engine more than 1500 rpm, so I don't think its going to hurt anything as long as its supported correctly by jackstands. I've just never heard of anyone doing this so just checking before I go ahead.

It is not a big deal to do, just be very careful and support the car properly. I did this to my car today.

And be especially cautious not to get anywhere near the driveshaft. If that thing grabs your jacket it can kill you to death.

I had a rattle under the car and it was the starter hitting the fly wheel. I used a stethoscope and it was very easy to be sure what it was. It cost $10 at the auto parts store. I made sure the car was very secure by pushing it in several different places before i got under.
