Exclamation Curb Check - bent axle?

bad tires + wet roads

I dented my rim, checked it out and it was fine.. drove away no prob. well drove it again today with the windows up and i can hear some kinda creaky/sweaky type sound everytime the wheel does a rotation. So i drive slow and hang my head out the door and sure enough the wheel has a little bend to it everytime i hear that noise.

1st i'll be totally flabbergasted if that beefy of a wheel actually did bend
2nd So what if the wheel is bent that wouldn't make noise would it?

that is why Im thinking axle.

You may have done more damage to the rim than you think. Take it to a shop and have it checked for balance. If the rim checks out, have the axle checked for straightness.

I did the same thing a few years ago (actually spun completly around and jumped curb backwards). I dented one wheel and bent one axle and eversince have not been able to perfectly align rearend. Hopefully yours isnt that bad.

I think it was like $400 to replace the axle back in 2002. I had already ordered new wheels but they werent on the car yet.

hm cheaper then I expected.. who did that? private shop or dealer?

as long as my wheel balances out ok i'll let it roll, you can't really see the dent unless you know its there.

Measure the runout on your axle shaft. This will tell you rather or not it is bent.

I had a similar experience. Spun out and jumped a curb and sidewalk backwards. A victim of a little bit of black ice and a brief lapse in common sense.
I bent an axle, dinged the rim and also bent the rotor. Or it may have warped from driving it for a while with the bent axle.
I replaced both of my axles with Moser axles. They were cheaper and better than stock replacements.

how do I do this?

I was expecting to be able to take the wheel off and notice the rotor or studs being bent like my wheel... but it sounds like you are saying i might not be able to see it with my eye??? If i rotate eveyrthing with the wheel off and notice a warp that would be the axle right?

removed the wheel and it was looking lke it was only the rotor, but after staring at it for a while and feeling around with a long screwdriver on the back side where the studs connect.... 99.9% is the axle and not just the rotor. :-(

so this isn't looking to bad. Price for just doing 1 side axle bearings and seals is 375.00

if i wanna do bearings and seals on the other side as well it will be 502.00

what do you think? do the other side as well seeing how the car has 106K on it.

I'd just buy a used rear end and swap it in. That would run you as little as $150-200.

I'd like to know where you can buy a rear for 200 bucks... I did the same thing on ice. Spun around completely and hit a curb with the driver's side. All the used rears I looked at were above 350. I finally found a used set of axles for 100.
