Converting To Manuel
Converting To Manuel
i have a 1996 camero z28, its automatic im sick of it ... it runs 13.7 in qaurterile auto with a performance chip in.... i want to convert it but im estimating 2,500 for everything, is it a good switch wat type or trany should i use... any websites? i have the money for it i just wanna know how much work it will be
Re: Converting To Manuel
Your gonna be lookin at a lot of work right there, not only having to change out the transmissions, you have to make other slots for the brake and clutch pedals and then have to run all different linkage cables, and get a new console for a thats designed for a manual. My advice is to take whatever performance parts off that car you have on there, sell that car and get a manual of the same year, then put your performance parts on that car and buy a supercharger for it, or even a hotcam kit. I have a six speed and love it, but i would never try to convert automatic to manual especially on a newer camaro, there's no room to work at all and you dont want to get half way threw the project and quit, or even worse mess up your car in process. Spend money on something to make it faster, you'll like it better in the long run.

Try searching this - all conclusions (besides rare circumstances) that I have seen point to the fact that it is NOT worth it to convert.

Re: Converting To Manuel
The swap is not as hard as everyone makes it out to be. I got everything i needed together and had it done in a weekend. DWL-Z28 shot me a PM and i can give ya some more info, websites, and a run down on what ya need..

Re: Converting To Manuel
Like Hot Rod said, the swap isnt hard at all. In most cases you get everything you need to get everything done. The only crappy part is actually putting the pedals in. Everything else is pretty simple. Good luck.
Re: Converting To Manuel
While swapping from auto to manual is not all that big of a deal (but a bit of work), if you are looking to improve 1/4 mile times, you are better of with an automatic. Times will be more consistent and with the right combination of mods, times will get better. If you just like to shift, then go for the swap.
Re: Converting To Manuel
Converting to a M6 isn't hard if you have all the correct parts before you start. There are a few good install guides on the net that pretty much walk you through it. If you have never worked on your drivetrain/tranny before and are unfamiliar with it, I wouldn't recommend trying to do it yourself. If your doing it for a performance gain you may be a little disappointed unless your a pro at driving the stick. A properly setup auto will run very hard. I'm not trying to start one of those "auto VS Manual" which is faster threads. Also remember you will need to buy a new clutch if you do the swap, no point in putting a used clutch in.
I did the swap in one weekend and took about 18 hours start to finish. The hardest part for me was mounting and adjusting the pedals, just not much room to move in there. I did the swap because I always wanted a M6 and my A4 died the second time and though I would try it.

Aw come on ya'll, not everyone on earth speaks english perfectly or even at all. Give him a break.
As others said, it isn't near as hard as you think. I converted mine in 11 hours.... by myself. The only part i had help with was when i had my brother was around to help move the jack while I positioned the trans into place and got some bolts started. IMO, the hardest part was @#%$ing with the pedals to get them in place (i didn't take the steering column out). Torqueing (sp?) all those bolts was tiring though... there is quite a few. I spent about $2800 after all was said and done, including rear end gears and the cost of them being put in. Without the rear end work, the swap costed about $2300.
Get a torque wrench, a good ratchet set with plenty of extensions, a jack and some stands, a day in the garage, and a case of beer. You'll be done before you know it as long as you have all the parts (trans and its stuff, shifter and boot, console, rear end with the gears you want, programmed PCM, and all the wiring pigtails). I planned and collected parts for 3 months during the fall of 2003 before starting the swap, since i was in college at the time and only had a weekend to do it (not to mention college was 200 miles away from home, lots of time spent driving on friday and sunday afternoon). And it is well worth the work too. I will be trying to put the manual back in later this summer after a year and a half of being out of commission (T56 pooped out a year after the swap and i had to put the auto back in).
If you have any questions about the swap itself, feel free to ask.

Re: Converting To Manuel
hey fast! i appreciate everyting and you informing me on all the details. wat transmission should i get along with the gears and the wiring how much do i need to spend on all that? thanks alot!
Re: Converting To Manuel
also i heard wen you convert to manual the ENGINE light is always on... if you dont do the computer part right? it will keep saying skipt shift thats what i thought i cold be wrong though
Re: Converting To Manuel
You have to get the PCM reprogrammed for the M6. Then it will light the "skip shift" light, which is normal. That's not the SES light, its simply a light that tells you the PCM has activated "skip shift" and blocked the shift from 1st to 2nd. But that's not important, because the first thing anyone does with an M6 tranny is disable the "skip shift" feature by using a 2Kohm resistor in the harness connector for the Skip shift lockout solenoid. No more blocked shifts, and no SES light. You will still have the "skip shift" light coming on when the PCM thinks its blocking your shifts, and that can be eliminated as well if it bothers you. My M6 car has been converted to a TH400 automatic, with reverse pattern manual valve body, and the skip shift light still comes on..... I don't even notice it any more.
