Converter observations

I think the new forum is a good idea, and I have the first (or actually second) post!

Tonight I finally got to put some miles on my new setup with the TH400 and the 4,200 stall converter. Just FYI, the converter is more than tolerable, I had no problem with the stall at all. I wouldn't like to drive with it all day in traffic, and I'm sure the mileage will suck. But if you were wondering about high stall and drivability, it's not nearly the problem I thought it would be.

Consider it the first. Mine don't really count.

BTW...we will be needing at LEAST one moderator for this section....

Hmmm...

Interesting Rich

I just bought a 3200 Vigilante and was originally worried about drivability, and thought about going down to 2800 stall speed. But if your not having any problems with 4200, I guess I shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Jason, I'm willing to fill that position

Let me know how you like your 3,200. But as I said, after being pretty apprehensive about it I was very pleased. No stop and go though, that would get old quick.

So Rich, this is the new converter from Coan they were sending you?

You're not driving through this one? If so, that's great, glad to hear it.

How's it pull on those 3rd gear highway nitrous-hits?

Yes, Coan did come through, even though it took them a while. They replaced the stator and said "this is as tight as we can make it". It does stall ~1,000rpm lower than the original converter and feels quite different. On the dyno, it acted "right". According to Coan, no one makes a HD steel stator for anything larger than a 10" converter, so it's this or a Lenco. I have my fingers crossed.

Haven't used the N2O yet, as the tune isn't completely dialled in. It's going on the dyno on Sunday and with any luck I will know the answer then .

What final drive gear ratio are you running? I'm considering a change to 3.90s or 4.10s and a 3500 rpm stall converter.

You're gonna laugh, but I am running 3.42's. As it is, I am wondering if I am going to run out of rpm before the traps. My setup is designed to rev to ~6,500. Given the amount of slip I saw in the converter on the street (3,000rpm = 62mph) I expect not more than ~140mph at 6,500 with the 27" tires I have for the track. I am hoping to run in the low 140's, so it will be interesting. If it's close, I will just go to a 28" tire. If it's not even close, I guess I will just rev it higher

As far as I can tell, I believe I have 3.36:1 ( ). I'm turning about 3000 rpm at 70 mph with my current 2400 rpm stall converter and 27 inch tires. I also need to get a LSD.

Hehehehe. Big (small diameter) converters are our friends!

The key with any converter is to put it with the right aplication. No matter what I prefer a Highly efficent converter. My Ynak seems to be right at 4% with 500/500 Power going into it.

I ran a TH400 and 4,200 Stall on the streets for years. Once a year I would freashen the trans and put new bearings and Sprag in the converter.

Short of ripping input shafts out of the forward drum I was good to go

Glad to see we have the new section

I've got that converter in my stock engine impala. I've also had 3.73 and 4.10 gears behind it, so my experience will be different. But my best ET is 13.75 in good weather with a 1.92 short time and a bad posi. With the 4.10s and new eaton posi, I ran a 13.78 in bad weather with a 1.82.

I only got this converter because I was planning ong going with a cam that's bigger than the hot cam. It's been fine for the 191/196 stock B-LT1 cam though

Okay guys need your help. I am fixing to install a 700r behind my motor. done away with the 6 bannger. The car has around 500 horsepower and 175 shot of the go go juice. I am running 4:30 gears in the back. I am going to order a stall in the 3400 to 3600 range. Do you think I would even need a lockup for highway trips with my low gears will I probley be off the converter at say 65mph. Also who do you fell makes the better converter vigilante or yank. Fixing to spend hard earned money your info would be nice.
