constant clanking noise

i just started hearing this noise like something is attached to the driveshaft. its a constant noise that hits based on my speed. it's much faster than the wheel turning so i know it isnt on the wheel or axel, and it increases speed even when changing gears so i know it isnt before the transmission.

i looked under the car too. i didnt see anything unusual except for this band around the driveshaft where it looked like something was scraping it, but i felt around and nothing seemed close enough to touch it(my car was on ramps, so the rear end was not hanging)

any ideas?

Re: constant clanking noise

sounds like u- joints or possibly a broken mount (like an LCA bushing or mount). u-joints clank a lot from a dead stop, and generally don't do much at speed unless you really dig into the gas. bushings and mounts can make all kinds of weird noises. check those u-jooints and let us know. it should have no play in the housing.

i havent been able to check it yet but, this morning, i was forced to drive it to go to class. while driving, suddenly there was a high pitched whine, the abs inop light came on and then the whine stopped.

Re: constant clanking noise

alright, i just got under there, and grabbed my driveshaft, torque arm, and LCA's. the torque arm and LCA's were solid, so i assume their bushings/mounts are still fine. the drive shaft had a little play in twisting it, but that should be normal right? it also had about a millimeter or two of side to side play where it connects to the tranny, but it was solid at the rear end.

so would the sound be from the output shaft rattling? i doubt it's jumping splines because the connection between the engine response and tires still feels solid. nothing actually "feels" wrong, so hopefully that means im not stripping anything

Re: constant clanking noise

For giggles and poops, push up on the tail end of the tranny and see if the tranny mount is broken. Can't really tell on these by just looking at it unless it is quite obvious it is broken.

Re: constant clanking noise

the tranny was solid, just like everything else. hell even the driveshaft felt solid the second time i was under there. i guess the only thing left now is to pull out the driveshaft and look at the yoke. i'll try to get to it tomorrow before class.

Re: constant clanking noise

alright, i finally got around to taking the driveshaft out and the slip yoke looked just fine. on the back u-joint there was a piece of metal holding the caps from the cross piece together; it was broken so i pulled it out thinking that was the problem. i put the drive shaft back on making sure to push the caps in as much as possible; there was no play whatsoever, but when i tried driving the noise was still there. was that metal piece vital or was it just a safety?

the metal piece can be seen resting on one of the caps in case you dont know what i mean

Re: constant clanking noise

how about taking a look at your brakes. you said your ABS inop light came on. Maybe you have a problem with something in your brake system at one of your wheels.

Re: constant clanking noise

well, i thought of that, but it didnt make any noise when pushing it around without the driveshaft. plus the noise is consistantly about 4 times as fast as the wheel rotation. im guessing 3.73 times to be exact

Re: constant clanking noise

you know.. it could be the emergency brake cable rubbing on the driveshaft. I think you said there was a band around the driveshaft where something looked to be rubbing... I had the same problem with the band and it was that the E-brake cable has come unclipped from the mount in the Tranny well and was rubbing on the driveshaft..

Re: constant clanking noise

all the clips were in place and i even put something around a spot that looked kind of worn to see if that was it. the noise was still there and the cable wasnt hitting the driveshaft. i think the band and the worn section of cable were from when i broke my torque arm a while back.

any other ideas before i pull my tranny?
