Angry Clutch Slippage

Hey guys
my clutch on my 98 z28 m6 is slipping bad. Like when you shift sometimes the revs go real high but without acceleration. My question is do i know a whole new clutch with bearings and pressure plates and everything? or just a new clutch? and how hard is this to do?

You'll be better off replacing everthing , the disc pressure plate at least surface the flywheel & the pilot bearing.
You should defiantely also do the hydraulics, the slave & the master.
Have you ever done a clutch B-4?

The cost is dependant upon the parts you select, there are alot of different clutches out there of various degree's.
Look thru the sponsors list here & see their pricing on the stuff.
Hydraulics will be 250 + & the clutch set at least 300 at the cheapest.
Shop around, is the motor stock?

If you can deal with a bunch of clutch chatter during the break in period, go with a SPEC Stage III clutch...I got the entire package including a new flywheel for just over $500. Its a VERY high performance clutch...it'll take a beating all day long and just smile back at you. You will have to update your hydraulics though...not too sure how much that goes for since mine is an '01.

You gave no info on your mods. Are you sure why you are slipping? Age? Tranny fluid?

No I dont know why its slipping. I guess i just assumed it needed to be replaced. Its completely stock car, with almost 110k on it. So im thinking it migh tnot have ever had the clutch replaced. But someone said something about adjusting the clutch to me, and also about tranny fluid? Do these affect slipping? And how would I check, adjust those?

There is noting to adjust on these clutches. If the fluid is bad or the slave/master is bad that could certainly hasten the demise of clutch or cause slipping, but at 110K I'd guess the clutch is finished anyway. Pull the inspection cover off the front of the bell housing, shine a bright light in there and maybe you can get a glimpse of the clutch surface, or a better bet might be to pull the slave cylinder off and peek in throught there. That's what I would try to do anyway.

At a minimun, you'd need a clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and a pilot bearing. Typically about 450$ for good parts. You'd also need to resurface your flywheel which is usually adequate, or you'll have to get a new flywheel. I'd resurface it, for about 20$ Then you'd have to examine master and slave cylinder for issues, and replace as necessay or take your chances, but given all you have invested in the clutch job, it is not really worthwhile scimping in this area. New slave master assy is about 200$

I would think you could do the job yourself in a day if you had a buddy helping. The job is awkward and there is a bit of heavy lifting involved, but there is nothing really complicated about it. I don't know what a shop would charge, but I'd guess something like 6 hours.
