Clutch problems, have a few questions.
Clutch problems, have a few questions.
here we go...
Just finished swapping a t-56 into my auto car (97). The clutch is a Ram HD, stock flywheel and about 3-4K on the clutch.
I replaced the master and slave cylinders during the install.
When driving normal it seems to work just fine, everything is real smooth, however if I slip it a bit when driving faster and shifting gears, it slips even after I release the pedal fully. Also it may have slipped on its own at the top of 2nd gear with a bit of throttle. The pedal engagement is pretty far up. I had a '94 with a stcok clutch and it seemed a bit lower.
I did clean off the flywheel and PP with brake cleaner before installing them. I should not have to "Break In" the clutch again since it is the same fly/disc/pp right?
Should I try to shim out the slave cylinder a bit with a washer on each stud? That would move my pedal engagement down right? I'm thinking maybe the slave is not letting the clutch engage all the way?
Thanks for the help.....

Re: Clutch problems, have a few questions.
If the flywheel has been resurfaced, you might have to add shims- I'm pretty sure they make them just for that purpose, don't use washers or anything like that the shim thicknesses will need to be within a thousandth of each other and I wouldn't trust washers for that.
If your clutch doesn't engage until the top of pedal travel you might not be getting full clamping power, which could explain some of your problems. And I wouldn't try shimming the slave, you don't want that pushrod getting loose from too much clearance and falling out, do you?
Problems like this after tranny swaps are normal. When I did my swap all the clutch hydraulics were shot.
On my car clutch engagement starts at almost the bottom and full clamping power doesn't take place till close to the top. It's a mistake I've made a couple of times while launching is not letting up all the way.
Remember that a hydraulic clutch is different than your typical cable setup in that it uses hydraulic force to allow greater clamping force while still maintaining low pedal effort, but the downside is that it takes more pedal travel to cover the same distance. I know my dad's Toyota is a lot easier to shift quickly in than my car.

Re: Clutch problems, have a few questions.
Thanks for the response. That does make sense, I suppose it was resurfaced when it got the new clutch, and i did not recieve or install any shims during the swap. Looks like I will be pulling it out and running over to the machine shop. They should have the correct shims I imagine?
