Clutch problem

A couple months ago while driving my car I stalled a couple times leaving stop lights and noticed the clutch was engaging right off the floor. I found out there was no fluid in the clutch master cylinder. I was just trying to add DOT 3 brake fluid and bleed the system. I removed the slave cylinder from the transmission and tried to push in the rod on the end. It wouldn't go in. I pulled it out a tiny bit and now it wiggles back and forth. My question is: should it move side to side or only in and out. I'm sure there will be some play side to side, but this moves a few inches either way. And I can't push the rod in at all. I'm wondering if there was a problem with this to begin with and I need a new slave cylinder or possibly the whole set up. The car has 87,000 miles on it now and 79,000 when I replaced the clutch with a SPEC Stage 3.

Thanks for any insight to my problem,

Andy

Anyone? Maybe I'll just buy a new master cylinder and slave assembly and not worry about it anymore.

I'm really late on this response, but your slave cylinder is broke. The rod should extend out a good 5 or 6 inches..... maybe more. you should be able to push it in 4 inches or so, and watch it extend back out by itself.

the play side to side is normal, as it's just a rod with ***** on both ends... that rubber boot is the only thing holding it onto the cylinder. Don't be afraid to yank that boot off & look inside to see what's happening.... can't hurt anything, and it goes back on pretty easily.

not necessarily, i just put a new slave on mine and all it is, is a ball and socket. the rod inside the slave is what pushes it out and it automatically retreats. you can pull the rod out on the slave and when it gets out of the socket youre able to move it in and out and side to side. this is right. the piece that it hooks in to inside the bell housing and the rod inside the slave is what keeps it in place.
