Clutch choices

Im looking into a couple of different clutches right now but the top two are the spec stage 3 and the ram98516HD. I think both are rated the same. What suggestions do you guys have for a 400 rwhp car with a 200 shot?

Re: Clutch choices

I have never seen any problems with any of specs stuff. If you have ever talked with David @ spec you will know that he would be more than willing to help if you did have a problem. I have seen a stg3 take plenty of abuse behind a 460rwhp LS1 with 4.10's Never a wimper. I wold look more towards the spec stg5i it has more holding power to deal with that 400rwhp plus the 200 shot and it drives and acts like a stg 3. just my .02

I've never had any problems either. It was a rough break in, but after that period it has worked great.

Just a few threads...

Also seen a few personally come apart (not as bad as the ls1racer pic). Nasty stuff. I have heard that they have revised their design several times, but still wouldnt buy one.

I know of two mid 400 hp ls1 cars running ram clutches, both TONS of track time and they held up well. I figure 400rwhp is ~475 fly, plus 200 n20 is normally what you get at the ground, so 230ish fly, either way you are way above even the 600hp rating. At those levels, like i said before street twin is the way to go.

Re: Clutch choices

Hey Jared did you ever get those LT4's on your car? If so, what are the numbers?

Re: Clutch choices

Man I cant belive people are haveing all these problems out of there SPEC clutches. Ive had my Stage 4 in for almost a year now and Ive bet the hell out of it, I still have 3.23s in mine too which makes it even harder on the clutch and my car is over 3600 pounds. When I first put it in I thought I was having some trouble out of it, but I gave it another month of breakin time and now it works amazing!!! Over a hundred 4500rpm clutch dumps and no problems yet.

Yes. Probably 99% people are satisfied with this excellent clutch. I put mine through INCREDIBLE abuse and it took it. How about a couple of (accidental) second gear launches at the track (prepped surface) with slicks in a 3,850lb car with with close to 1,000hp and 3.42 gears! It stunk to high heaven but after cooling off back out on the track and no slippage whatsoever.

Will a lesser (and cheaper) clutch be adequate for your setup? Maybe.

Re: Clutch choices

If you want a good cheap, strong clutch i would go with the spec stage 4. Most people that have it seem to love it and have little problems with it. I've heard alot of bad stuff about the stage 3 though. I've heard spec will always give you a new clutch but who wants to pull the tranny that many times to get it right.

Re: Clutch choices

Dont forget the street twin comes with a new flywheel. So if your motor is internally balanced, you can order a nuetral flywheel from them. Otherwise you will need to have your current flywheel all balanced and stuff.

Re: Clutch choices

I am using a Spec Stage 4. Do not use a Stage 3, every clutch I had before this stage four broke due to a failure with the springs in the hub. Stage 4 has no springs.

400rwhp and 175 shot will eventually kill a stage 3's springs. AMHIK.

Either ante up for the McLeod, or get a stage 4 spec.
