Cleaning Transmission?

So I pulled my transmission because it wasn't going into the gears when the car was running...not sure what the problem might be but my first thought was throwout bearing. I ordered a Zoom clutch kit from Summit since it was a little over $400 and I'll try that out. I also am having a hard time getting that bellhousing off...I'll try to tilt the motor or dent the blocking body panel some.

In any case the transmission is extremely dirty including where the fork is. Is it suppose to get this dirty or do I have a leak somewhere? Also whats the best way to clean it...just some simple green degreaser and hose it down? I don't want to ruin the transmission is the only reason I'm questioning this method.

Thanks in advance.
