car won't stay in reverse

I'm stumped

My 95 Z-28 has a 6 speed transmission. My problem is that the car will kick out of reverse once I have backed up a few feet. The shifter moves and there is a loud thunk sound.

I have disassembled the transmission and none of the components are showing excessive wear. Does anyone have any advice? Does anyone know what an exceptable amount of freeplay there is on the reverse gear?

BTW, when I took the transmission out I found the pilot bushing and the clutch needed to be replaced. I have fixed those items and still have the same dilema with the reverse.
