Busted driveshaft?

I was just going to work, got maybe a quarter mile from home, got on the highway, had a huge pop like it's backfired, and now the car won't go into drive. If I try, I just get clang, clang, clang, so I figure I busted the driveshaft. This is ridiculous, I haven't built my car up that well yet to be busting the driveline up like this. Does it sound like the driveshaft to you? What all one could I use to replace this one from a junkyard (possibly any third or fourth gen) if I can't get one tomorrow at Advance?

If it busted the driveshaft, wouldn't it be hanging down? If it won't go into drive, sounds more like a transmission problem to me.

It's definitely clanging between the transmission and rear axle, not at either of them. Could it bust in the center since it's a two piece driveshaft?

Are you running a V6 driveshaft?

youv'e got a two piece driveshaft? Are you sure you didn't just blow the ring and pinion?

I'm pretty ignorant of things in the driveline, but yes it is a two piece driveshaft. I'm sure of that, it's what it had when I bought the car. You can really move the driveshaft around a lot right now. I've never tried to move it around before so I don't know if it that's usual or not. My buddy crawled under it and you can't see anything broken.

What is the ring and pinion and the pinion gear?

How could I tell if it was the pinion gear instead of the driveshaft?

You could probably roll the car, even in park, and it would make the noise if the pinion or ring gear was stripped (Your rearend ). Will the car go into any other gear at all?

It starts up fine. You can put it in park, and it doesn't make a sound, you put it in neutral it might make a sound for just a half second, put it in drive or reverse and clank clank clank.

I didn't think so, but maybe v6's had them?

If the driveshaft is still in place, then its sounding more and more like your rearend.

I think the early 94's and 93's had the two piece driveshafts. The driveshaft is still in place as it's connected to everything from what I can see. Could it break in the center but you couldn't see it cause the bushing? If it is the pinion gear how much work am I looking at?

If it is the rear that busted up, it's not all too bad. You need to know what you are doing though. Confirm whats busted before jumping to conclusions though

My best friend's dad is a certified mechanic and he's going to check it tomorrow for me, but if it's the driveshaft I'd like to have one lined up so I can go pick it up tomorrow.
