Burned 3rd gear clutch pack...got questions on repair

Transmission will only go to 2nd gear. My guess is the 3rd gear clutch pack is burned. How much would you figure it would cost for a new clutch pack install? Also, should trans issues be taken to a trans shop or do most general auto mechanics know how to fix transmissions? I hear AAMCO is a rip off, is this correct?

Thanks

If the 3-4's are gone, you mey want to look into a complete rebuild. Most general repair shops don't get involved with automatic transmissions...especially not the 4L60E's. Heck, even most transmission shops don't know how to rebuild them correctly. That's why we've taken on becoming specialists with this particular transmissions, and built a reputation of being the best in the country.
Where are you located? If you've got any questions, please give me a call. 302-250-1202

Thanks for the reply. A rebuild requires me to send you my tranny right? I live in California and would prefer to either get it done here or purchase a new one. What are my options? Can't a tranny shop just replace the 3-4 clutch pack? Shouldn't that be around $600-$700 or a rebuild for several hundred more? I just want this thing fixed as inexpensively as possible.

All suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Yes, A rebuild would require you to send us your transmission. Shipping costs would be around $100 (each way).

You may find a shop willing to replace just the 3-4 clutches, but I'm sure they'll try to talk to into a complete rebuild. You probably won't get any kind of warranty with a repair, either. So, if something else fails in it a few weeks later, your stuck with paying for it all over again. Fixing it "as inexpensively as possible" may come back to haunt you later.

We offer a "performance rebuild" for $800. A "race" rebuild for $1000, and a 9 second "pro race" build for $1400.

Send it to Frank. You won't be disapointed. With that hotcam and 3000 stall, your going to want a nice transmission to handle some good power. Go with at least the "race" build.
