Broken T56 Mainshaft
Broken T56 Mainshaft
I was on Hot Rods dragweek almost 2 weeks ago in the middle of BFE Illinois.
Ran it 8 times on sunday test and tune with no problems. The car just kept bogging off the line because the tires were gripping very well. My best time that day was a 12.9 @ 107 with a 1.9 60'. After getting rained out the first 2 days and driving close to 700 miles pulling a trailer the rain stopped and i bolted the Quick time pros back on aired them up to 23 pounds and pilled the N20 for a 100 shot. Lined up to launch and let the clutch go at about 3500 and boom. that was it the mainshaft broke right where it necks down for the yoke. I wasn't even spraying off the line the n20 is on a window switch and a full throttle switch. Well $1200, a mazda 3 rental car and pulling the tranny back out because the guy forgot the 6th gear syncro and i drove it the 900 miles back to maryland pulling the trailer getting 19 mpg
. something is still wrong with 1st and 2nd. Its real hard to get into gear but it works ok. They said it was because of the new parts they put in. Iguess ill be pulling it back out.
sorry for the long post but it was an adventure.
Does anyone sell a better 27 spline mainshaft or is it viper spec or nothing.
Thanks, karl

Re: Broken T56 Mainshaft
It happend! The guy who won it or however it worked posts over another board i'm on, ran low 8s and didnt even take tools lol! Bet ya had a blast other than the trans problems.
Re: Broken T56 Mainshaft
Dragweek was a blast even though i didn't even get to run a pass that counted. What site are you talking about.
I am going to pull the tranny to have it gone through by a tranny guy that I know locally
. The fact that the guy left parts out the first time definetly did not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling about the tranny but it did get me home
I was thinking about the viper mainshaft but it makes it harder to get driveshaft parts. If thats all I can get thats stronger than thats what I will have to get.
I just want to be able to launch my car on slicks and not to have to worry too much about the drivetrain.

If you're launching on slicks, it's the only way to go IMO.

I broke my t-56 pretty much the same way. I got John Donato's email from a board member a long time ago. I have to say my t-56 is sweet. I have the viper main shaft (output? I think it's the same thing
), carbon kevlar syncros, and steel forks. There where some other sweet upgrades like billet fork pads (stock are plastic), cryo treat main shaft, cooling pump and rad, ect...
I love how it shifts, I never thought my notchy stock t-56 could ever be thrown through the gears like that
. I was told that alot of that was the carbon kevlar syncros. I guess the factory paper ones glaze over, or decay in general as they are not performance oriented. Regardless of the reason, the result is when you push the clutch pedal the gears are still spinning. Where the carbon kevlar ones stop the spinning gear virtualy instantly, letting you blast through to the next gear. Immagine virtually never feeling the shifter hit the neutral area, it's just one smooth throw from shifter stop to shifter stop... in any direction.
The sum of the parts and attention to clearances coupled with experiance is a good combo. I hope he's arround for a long time.
NOTE: I am not a transmission expert, so if I didn't acurately describe the function of the syncro please don't flip out.
