Broken SPEC Stage 3 carbon...
Well I had praised this clutch from the beginning but I was sitting at a stop light a few weeks ago and heard this really funny high pitch screeching noise, then it went away..I thought it was the car beside me and I went ahead and went on my way..Well, later that day I took the RPMs up to around 4k and had this nasty Vibe then went to shift into 4th and the peddle stuck to the floor for a sec then poped back up
I thought maybe my hydraulics where low or something so I went home and checked..Not low at all so then I decided to look elsewhere...Took the hydraulic lines and the plate that holds them off the tranny and there was alot of metal hanging around right there
Welps, dropped the tranny today and low and behold I had 3 out of the 6 springs on the clutch disc fall in my hand when I removed the pressure plate
None of them where broke, just the small tab that holds them in their place was missing...Also the throwout bearing was just hanging there and not held on by nothing..Flywheel has a few scratches but hopefully it will be ok..
Called SPEC this afternoon and left message so hopefully their great Customer Service that I hear of will take care of me..I'll keep you guys updated..
PS~ This clutch had been to track 1 time and that was it..Everything else was easy miles on the streeet..arghhh

Re: Broken SPEC Stage 3 carbon...
Wow, that sucks. I've been trying to decide between getting the stage 3 & 4 for to replace my SLP clutch for a while now. I just got my stage 4 carbon in this week. The main reason I didnt want the 3 was these stories of the springs breaking. If I were you I'd get a new stage 4 to replace it. That disc doesnt look like it could break, its pretty stout.
Re: Broken SPEC Stage 3 carbon...
Man that sucks...but i am glad i decided to go with the stage 4 lol.
Specs customer service was great for me, i called and got a real person first try.
Hope they take care of you.

Re: Broken SPEC Stage 3 carbon...
See if they'll give you a credit toward a stage 4 disc, they use the same pp, just the stage 4 doesn't have the springs.
did that with an AZ clutch, then i sheared one, i'm done with spring hubs, going stage 4 when i buy mine.
the springs don't actually break, just the tabs that hold them in, people just refer to it as busting a spring.

Re: Broken SPEC Stage 3 carbon...
Arghhh...Called me back today and they are saying I have too much movement in the drivetrain(input shaft play,etc..) and that would be the only way it would have caused those springs to pop out like that.. I dont understand this at all??? They arent wanting to warranty but are gonna charge me $300 for a Stage 4. I am 100% sure everything is lined up because I ran my stock clutch for the longest w/ zero problems...
If its their defect(why would they have changed/upgraded this disc?) why cant they stand behind it?
I have looked back at numerous posts and found same results from people about the springs just falling out because the tab cracks and allows them too...
What is everybody's take on this?????
Guess I shoulda listened and went w/ the 1k McCloud dual friction in the first place

Re: Broken SPEC Stage 3 carbon...
Question...
If your Spec Stage 3 clutch disc broke, what was the actual broken piece?
Did your springs just fall out because the tab broke? Or did your actual spring break??
Thanks

Re: Broken SPEC Stage 3 carbon...
Here is a pic I found on the web, and this is exactly what mine did...
SPEC
I just need to confirm this is what everyone else's Spec Stage 3 looked like when it snapped..They are trying to say I have an alignment problems, which in my opinion is an easy way out of warrantying it.

Re: Broken SPEC Stage 3 carbon...
That is EXACTLY what happened to my SPEC stage 3...and I have a turbo V6...probably no more than 250hp.
Here are the pics of mine:

I plan on calling them to see what they'll do...
I had it in for a little over 2 years and probably ~15k miles.

Re: Broken SPEC Stage 3 carbon...
hmm, i've done that to the cheap AZ clutches but didnt' realize spec was having this problem, just seemed like the stage 4 is less headache's but i've seen a few people that say the 4 is alittle grabby on the street, others say they like the stage 5.
that's horrible that spec gave you crap about warr. it, who did you buy it through?
