Bleeding Rear Drums
Bleeding Rear Drums
I have an '88 Camaro and I'm having a problem figuring out how to bleed the rear drums. I got under it and looked and i could see what looked kinda like a bleeder at the top of the drum, but it just looks like a hole. I didn't see a regular looking bleeder with a hex nut to loosen it. Is there something different I'm not seeing or has my car been tampered with before? Thanks.
Re: Bleeding Rear Drums
Look on the rear axle for a brake line, it should be clipped to the axle tube and should be ribbed (mine was, yours may not) but it is a line that is hard and about 1/4" in diameter. This line runs along the axle and goes into the back of the drum, and should have a hex fitting on it...this is the bleeder. When you bleed your brakes, make sure you are careful and have the right sized wrench. You do NOT want to round off the bleeders.
Re: Bleeding Rear Drums
yea, the ribs are there to prevent the lines from damage, where the line connects to the back of the drum is the wheel cylinder and right above it should be a bleeder screw, maybe severely rusted, but its there
when i bled the drums on my 87 i couldnt run a hose or anything, so i just cracked it open and had someone hit the brakes, and as soon as brake fluid kept shooting out i tightened the sucker back up

Re: Bleeding Rear Drums
and remember the way you turn it.. really sucks when the thing is rusted too.. as you can actually break the bleeder so it will not retighten... and reinstalling those things take a little bit... not hard.. just time consuming especially getting the wheel cyl out and then getting the retaining ring back in to lock it in place...
