Best way to dispose of a T56??
I'm going to clean out my garage, so I have room to work on my car......
Among the spare parts in the pile is a T56 out of a 97 SS, that had 13K miles on it. I bought it as part of a package including a Street Twin, bell housing, and a scatter blanket. I never used the T56. When it was removed from the SS, the car was making about 750HP, but the clutch/tranny had never been abused with high RPM clutch dumps or power shifting (he was only running low 11's because of that). As far as I knew - I drove the car before the tranny was pulled - it was in good shape.
I loaned it to a friend, and we installed it in his 97 Z28. Almost immediately he told me that 4th gear (and only 4th gear) was extremely noisy while cruising. Not a shifting problem, just noise. We swapped his old tranny back in, but I never got a chance to actually hear the "noise".
A couple of questions:
1. What do you think may be wrong with it?
2. Would it be best to just sell it "as is" (how much $$$ could I get?), or would it be better to get it rebuilt and sell it for a better price (how much $$$?)
Any thoughts will be appreciated.

A noisy 4th gear would lead me to believe that maybe he just didn't have good alignment between the crank (pilot bushing/bearing) and the center of the bellhousing. Had his motor ever been align-bored?
Since power isn't being transmitted through the countershaft in 4th, the transmission sounds a bit different in that gear than in others. It might just be a sign of a bearing on its way out, which would be a real simple fix.
As to the best way to "dispose" of it, I've got room in my barn
Na, seriously, I'd just make the decision based on how much time you've got to deal with it. Sounds like it's a real minor problem (if there's any at all), so if you know someone who can rebuild it for you, it'd probably be worthwhile to fix it and get the extra money out of it. On the other hand, if you have to pay labor to get it fixed, I'd just sell it as-is.

Fred, I would think even with the problem you described with 4th that it would still be worth around $400-500 since T56's with 50k miles or more miles listed in good working condition can go for $800-1000. I would just put it up for sale here "as is" along with your story and description of what the possible problem is with it. Anyone buying it is going to know that it needs to be torn apart and possibly rebuilt anyway. You could also try Ebay but someone like yourself would probably have more luck selling it here with your honest reputation and all.
