best new tranny

It looks like I'm going to need a new tranny very soon. The engine is hitting off the rev limiter on the 1-2 shift. So who builds the best tranny for our cars? All opinions will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I used www.pro-built.net he is located in CA and I am very happy. You are on the right track comming to the forums and asking for a recommendation. Many of us have used reputable local shops and gotten burned badly. Not that many places can actually build this tranny well for our purposes.

This is exactly what I'm looking for. How long have you had their tranny in your car?

Question have you recently changed the fluid or added a Larger than 3000-3200 stall????

No, change with anything. When I went to SEMA I left my car at my shop for about a week. Then when I got back that night, I tried to drive it home and it started bouncing off the rev limiter on the 1-2 shift. If I roll into the throttle slowly it will shift fine. It only hits the rev limiter when I'm at full throttle.

I'm guessing that while I was gone some Jackass drove my car. Of course nobody would fess up to it.

Re: best new tranny

ProBuilt has been in nearly 2 years with a 2800 stall, somewhere around 30K. It does all duty too from daily driving to launching on slicks at the track to light tow duty even. Have had fluid analysis done and did a filter change all within the last 5500miles or so and the analysis looked good and there was almost no clutch dust in the pan, but I do run a spinon tranny filter which would help that but combined with the analysis looking good I take it as a great sign.
I opted for the vacuum modulation too, I lost pcm shift firmness control but line pressure response is quicker which is supposed to lead to increased durability and does help the tranny respond to inputs faster.

Putting a vacuum modulator in a 4L60E is completely antiquated. Anyone who does so is trying to hanicap something else they're doing wrong. The computer / EPC solenoid is capable of regulating pressure more quickly and precisely than any vacuum modulator could ever think of.
You wouldn't believe how many cooked transmission (that someone else has built) that I've got to take the vacuum modulators back out of.
It's akin to replaceing fuel injection with a carburetor. The only reason to do it is because you don't understand it, or you're afraid of it. I'm glad I don't fall into either category. It's a wonder some of these "transmission builders" know how to use a computer. If the rest of there thinking rivals that of their transmission building techniques, they probably still use good old US Postal Service...because they're afraid of e-mail.

I went with Frank at CPT for mine. He does good work and is very helpful... I know there have been guys from all over the country and even some outside the US that have sent their tranny to CPT to get the work done, because Frank is one of the best around when it comes to our cars (I.E. 4l60e and 700r4)...

I second that....Frank is awesome at building trannys, Great guy to deal with and very informative. He really knows these tranny's: what makes them work well and what doesn't....
If nothing else give him a call and decide for yourself......

I'm sure many of you are familiar with Ed Wright at fastchip.com. He uses the vacuum modulator on his low 10 second 1996 F-body, and tells others running performance 4L60E's to do the same. Now here is an expert (with many years experience) on computer chip programming, & he told me that with everything he does to the programming, that the vacuum modulator (when installed properly) works better, because of its quicker response time. I use these on all of my Performance 4L60E's, with much success. With Ed & others constantly trying to improve the compuer chip, the current problems with the electronics, will be solved one day. Until then the vacuum modulator has proven itself to work very well. It might be an old idea, but as Ed Wright said, "it works", and I agree, besides, isn't that what this is all about.

Ed Wright must not be a TRANSMISSION BUILDER then... Those of us that are, know how to make the EPC set-up work better and last longer than the vacuum modulated.

Re: best new tranny

If that were true, then Dave at Rock On Transmissions, myself and others who build these units, (using the Trans-Go vacuum modulator), would not be getting the excellent results we have gotten. You do not have to be a builder to make comparisons, & to see the differences. Ed Wright is not a builder of these units, but he knows how to evaluate them, and why would he not state the obvious (from your point of thinking) that electronics are "superior", when the results say otherwise. There have been plenty of "side by side" tests to prove this, and the vacuum modulator wins "hands down". Look, if the "electronic" way of doing these works for you, "GREAT", but I work in the real world, and this has not "proven" itself to me and many others, that is "why" we use the these.
