Beefing up the 10 bolt?
HI, im 16 and going to school gettin ready to do some serious engine stuff and want drivetrain to handle it. Ive strengthened all parts of the drivetrain except the REAREND. Im scared that once I start pushing the 400 rwhp mark I would blow the the thing into oblivions with a solid launch. So it comes down to a few questions for all you experts. Im on a budget and wondering if you can strengthen the 10 bolt to handle mickey's and 400 horse. Would getting some heavy duty race axles take care of my fear or we talkin some major stuff? I really would like to "not" have to put a 12 bolt in. Any suggestions?
Re: Beefing up the 10 bolt?
Are you planning on getting new gears at all? The TA girdle should help out, but it would also be a good idea to stud the mains and eliminate your c-clips. I put in new 4.10s, studded the mains with ARP studs, installed new bearings and seals, and put on a TA cover. I still have my c-clips, though. So far, the rear has been holding up.
Re: Beefing up the 10 bolt?
If your only 16, 400 horse now will turn into 600 or 700 soon. I suggest you invest in a 12-bolt or 9-inch. I have the Moser 12-bolt. It is very heavy duty compared to the stocker btw. If you dump money into the 10-bolt, it is still a 10 bolt. At your age, I dumped all my money and lots of my time into a Chevy Vega. I realize now that was a mistake.
Re: Beefing up the 10 bolt?
Do not waste money on building up a 10 bolt. It will eventually (quicker or slower) fail and you will not be able to get any of your money back. (half price is labor and the other half is gears which will be broken) Start saving up for a 12 bolt or 9 inch. It's the ONLY way. Of course, automatics are easier on rears, but still.
