OK right before my blew my rear, it started whining AND my ABS light came on. Then the rear died. Can someone explain why the ABS light came on? This may be newbie question even though I've been a shade tree mechanic for 15 years.

FWIW, I know that on my 3channel non TC rear that the ABS sensor is on the top of the diff, but that's all I know.

Maybe vibrations from the dying rear screwed up the sensor or electrical connections.

 

Things changed on later models but on my 95 there's a reluctor ring next to the ring gear. The reluctor looks just like a big straight cut gear which spins with the ring gear under a sensor device. There's very little clearance between the reluctor and this pick-up. Probably a chunk of metal lodged or cleanly wiped out the sensor.
