banging noise when shifting into 2nd

When I drive the car hard and it shifts into second, the tires chirp nicely. Gotta love that

Lately im noticing a strange thing. When im pushin th ecar and it shifts into second, you hear and feel like this bang. Feels like its coming from the center of the car right under the shifter. Only seems to happen when the pedal is to the metal. Any ideas?

Very simple, 95% chance your transmission mount is broken. This happens to everyone, jack the car up, stabilize a floor jack safely under the transmission (i used a flat block of lumber to go across my pan to prevent damage) and LIGHTLY jack the transmission up, JUST enough to take the weight off the cross member. Take your center mount nut loose, then the 4 cross member bolts loose, drop it out of the way, take your old mount bolts out, install your new mount, reinstall the cross member and then let your jack down. Its about a 15 minute job and just about everyone has this happen. If you go with a heavy duty transmission mount, it wont be as likely to break, but you will feel more vibration. Personal recommendation, id stick with the stock mount, your not making crazy HP just yet. Good luck.

I would agree either its the mount or its the torque arm bushing.

Just came back from the mechanic. He said the mounts r fine. The exhaust was a little loose and thats what was making the noise. Cant really test it out yet as its just too slippery here.

If your going back to factory spec, get a LS1 mount- they are made better and will last longer. I recently had this problem and that is what was recommended to me . I have a 95 lt1 , it will bolt right up. The stud that comes through the crossmember is a different diameter compared to the Lt1 mount. Just go get one from your Chevy dealer and tell them you need the locking nut as well and you will be good to go

Wow, i hope for his reputation he's right. If its making the "bang" you described, in that area, and only under the throttle conditions you explained, he'll be dead wrong. There arnt any transmission "mounts" just a single MOUNT, the motor mounts were bound to be fine, they're much stronger and not in the location of the noise you described. The transmission mount on these cars breaks allllllll the time, its a very common thing. Personally just because of what you originally described in the thread, i think he's dead wrong, but we'll soon find out. Please repost after you test it, i am curious to know as to whether he was right or a complete retard.

My mechanic is my friend since elementray school. He has a nice big shop and has a 02 z28 and 2000 firebird z06 motor/nos. Im pretty sure he knows what hes talking bout. I needed an oil change yesterday, he checked the mount and said it was fine. My exhaust was a little loose and that had to be adjusted. Im just waiting for a dry day here and then I will try it out. The noise didnt happen all the time. I will let ya know!

Regardless of what your mechanic said I personally think its your trans mount (I hope its the exhaust but that doesnt make sense to me). You're describing the exact symptoms that many of us have had often more than once over the life of our cars when the mount breaks....

Sorry about the lack of updates. I take my car out on weekends and the past couple of weekends have just been rain rain and more rain.

Took the car out thursday night and sure enough, the banging was there shifting into second. Called up my mechanic and told him its still happening. He told me to bring the car to him sunday morning.

I bring the car into him and he looks at it personally. Turns out, the last time I gave him the car, one of his workers looked at it and said everything was fine. My mechanic friend puts the car up on the lift and sees it right away. Mount is broken. Puts in a new one in 5 minutesand that was that. Needless to say he wasnt too happy with his worker. He gave me the mount and a new pair of wipers free of charge. Gotta love having a best friend that has his own shop

Thanx for the input guys! You seemed to be right on target on this one!
