Balance Driveshaft??

Im working on a 98 Chevy Truck with an Ls1/6speed swap. I just finished lowering and now the driveshaft needs to be shortened.

I called the shop and they said they can do it for 90.00. But its 190.00 to shorten and banance. He said a lot of people dont balance. Whats everyones opinions on me balancing? I would rather save 100 bucks, but it seems like common sense to get it balanced.

If you plan on racing it, it's worth the $$$. If it's for street, probably not.

Re: Balance Driveshaft??

ALWAYS balance a driveshaft, ESPECIALLY if you're having it shortened.... it's just dumb not to.

If you cut it off, re-weld it and don't balance it, you WILL get vibrations, plain and simple.

Also, make sure that they are doing a high-speed balance >4K RPMs, and not just a "balance" which are normally like 3K or so. The high-speed balance helps remove any high-speed harmonics like driving down the highway.

Re: Balance Driveshaft??

Ok, Its all done. Shorted and balanced. Heres the problem, I THINK, the guy may have shortened an inch too much. He told me to pull it 1 inch out of the tranny and then measure from center to center of u-joint. Which was 55 1/2"
So I got it home, and its 54 1/2. Seems like its pulled out of the tranny a little more than it should be, But theres at least and inch inside the transmission. (with truck on the ground) Does this seem right? I think I will call them tomorrow...opinions?
