Bad Torque Converter?

hello, i think i have a bad torque converter...i dont think it is completely done yet....it just doesnt lock up i believe, because my Gas Mileage is worse, and when i downshift(Automatic) it doesnt send the RPM's up at all, i seriously believe it is time for a Tranny rebuild...it has 155 K on it, also, does anybody else have any problems on theyre car not locking into park? alot of times i put my car in park, and it will not lock in, just drifts back....have to hook ebrake, could this be the TC?

You might want to check the shifter linkage at the tranny. Maybe when you're downshifting, it isn't really downshifting and when you put it in park, it isn't actually in park. Just a thought.

When it doesn't go into park, does it stay in reverse?

yea, you have a point, that could be it, but if i down shift 2 gears, it should definately send the RPM's up...i havent ever looked to see if the Reverse lights stay on, i will have to do that....do you know how long the 4L60's go before needing a rebuild? it has 155,000 on it, i was thinkin maybe it is time for one...let me know thanks

I am confused about what you are describing. Do you mean the tranny will not downshift? As far as not going in Park, it's could be a mis-adjusted cable, as was pointed out. Otherwise, the tranny needs to come out and be dismantled to diagnose and once you do that on a 150K+ tranny, it's time to rebuild. When you rebuild the tranny, you should get a new TC.

Re: Bad Torque Converter?

Your reverse lights coming on wouldn't matter. They would follow your shifter posotion, not the actual transmission gear. As far as rebuild, I have 162k and it's getting rebuilt now. I lost 3/4 gears. Common problem with the 4l60's I found out.
Check the cable/linkage. It's right under the car on drivers side. Only takes a minute to check it out and it could be something obvious.

Also, as long as you can scrape the bills together, get it rebuilt. You have to just about take it out to change TC anyways. And like RICH said, with 155k, it just makes sense.
