Bad clutch or synchros?

I'm trying to figure out what is wrong here. I'm having a real hard time getting it into first and second, either from a stop or downshifting. To get it in to first, I usually have to put it in to second and then jam it up real hard into first, and to get it into second, I have to pull it real hard and there is there horrible grinding feeling as I get it in there. But this doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes it just goes in real nice and easy. Also, as far as the clutch goes, I'm really not sure if its slipping or not. My dad swears it isn't, but I'm not sure. Whenever I let it out fast (not even dump) it seems like the tach just climbs REAL fast but the car doesn't go anywhere, all the way through first and second. It might my my tires, but there not squealing, my back end just slides around. What should I look at first? Clutch, synchros, or tires?

Re: Bad clutch or synchros?

sounds like the clutch is shot to me, try to put it in a higher gear and give it some gas and see if it slips. It only grinds in 1st and 2nd gear though?

Re: Bad clutch or synchros?

Sounds like bad syncros. I would try putting it in 5th gear, and downshifting to 3rd at high rpms, to see if the clutch is slipping. If not, it has to be your syncro's because 1/2 is one syncro, 3/4 is one syncro, and 5th has its own. Just my thoughts

Re: Bad clutch or synchros?

if it's the synchros, try double clutching when shifting

so while you're shifting to the next gear, put it in neutral, push clutch pedal in, realease, then press it down again, and put it into the next gear.

this will help with the grinding until you get your synchros fixed.

Re: Bad clutch or synchros?

i try to do this to save synchro wear as well, mine aren't bad, but this way they will last longer. also works if you want a workaround for that CAGS
