Awd Z28

Has anyone heard of or tried to do an AWD Camaro conversion ? If so,do you have any idea how much the cost would be for a conversion of this type ? I had a friend that did a 4WD conversion on a 69 Vette by putting an Eldorado front end on it,but that was before everything was computer controlled.Anyone ?? Any ideas ??

Even if it was possible, I wouldn't even want to. Why ruin a great handling RWD car?

This has been discussed before.

A) I don't think there's room under the car to put a driveshaft, axles, and related components in the front.

B) I think the cons out-weigh the pros.............I mean, the added weight wouldn't help out the handling of an already ~3500 lb car, and with normal suspension upgrades, F-bodies are pretty good handling cars on their own anyways.

C) Except for pictures I saw of a maroon coloured LT1 Z28 that was jacked up and turned into a full 4X4, I don't think it's ever been done?..........well, not that I know of anyway?!

Oh, and D) It's a Camaro. Don't ruin it!!!!!

if my memory serves me somebody used astro/typhoon transaxles and front drive set up. The final verdict was that it added alot of weight and was really involved with lots of fabrication.

Yea, I think I remember seeing something along those lines too. Unless you are running a gigantic stroker, with some serious forced induction, the weight will probably kill you. If it some wet-weather traction you are looking for, just buy some mid 90's FWD car and save 1/2 of your hard earned money

Okay,okay...looks like everyone thinks it's not only more trouble than it's worth but a bad idea too.I was just hoping for some better traction in the snow, sounds like it would be cheaper & easier to just buy an old 4WD truck to use in the winter, buts thanks for the input,& please don't use "rice" & Camaro in the same sentence again,it kinda creeps me out.

I'd buy a beater V6 or something like that and experiment. Camaros are good toys for trying stuff like this out. Why not play around w/ it?

Anything can be done with enough time and effort.

I would not recommend messing with this though. You will have big time diminishing returns, and 2 to 3000 bucks won't even scratch the surface of a project like this.

You'd have an absolute ton of fabrication to get the parts in, but that's not the BIG problem.......

What would you have when you're done? It would be a total frankensteinmobile. Tough to service. Would weigh a ton. You'd have all kinds of little problems to sort out just to get it driveable.
AWD is better suited for a car when it is a part of the intial design.
From my perspective, toom many cons for not enough pros...
But don't let me dissuade you. I'd love to see pictures of it!!

BTW, most AWD cars have MacPherson front struts in order to make room for the front axles and parts. You'd probably have to convert the double wishbone in the F body. Kindof a step backwards....
