Are automatics really slower?

I was just wondering if Automatics are truly slower or is it not that much difference. I drove a manual camaro before i got my automatic and didn't see much difference in acceleraiton (Except it was choppy on the manual becuase i need more practice). I have always been told that manuals were faster but I heard that torque converters actually multiply torque on automatic transmissions so that woulld probably make the car move faster if that is right. Well anyways, can someone give me an explanation?

Re: Are automatics really slower?

well built..... as in 3500 stall with a transgo shift kit with racing solenoids and a programmed ECM...... but with all that you still have to change your gears out from the standard 3.08s to the standard 3.42s that come in a stick..... hmmm.....4 speed on a complex tranny that is prone to go out for whatever reason, sittin on a bunk rear end ratio..... VS a 5 or 6 speed.... with decent gears, and the ability to further control your vehicle.... im sorry, i HAVE an auto, and i know how to drive a stick, and ive driven the sticks..... sticks if driven properly can be the difference between life and death when talking about track ETs..... give me a 6 speed for raw performance ANY day..... screw autos!!!!!! they go out too often, and its 10 X harder to control your shifting... plus.... you have to consider that your cars best power curve is above 2500 RPMS..... having a clutch, and being able to fully control how much gas/clutch pressure is recieved, can seriously effect your 1/4 mile launches.... autos are good if you dont mind spending the money in maintaining them, or your strictly using them for drag.... but for a true "feel of the road" and true control over the car, GET A STICK!

Re: Are automatics really slower?

i do agree with some and also not a little info i have a 94 ta gt so it came with 3.42's(even though i now have 4.11's) my trans was built by rossler for $3,300 the same spec's as there 99 8 sec vette i have a 396 lt1 with 13.8:1 compression i put out almost 550 to the wheels before my 300 shot. with all this being said yes i am a drag racer and auto's are best for et and bracket racing. i went threw 6 4l60e's before i had this one built and have never looked back. my buddy eric also has almost the same car and comes in about 6 tenths slower than me with his 6 speed because he cant shift fast enough. in a everyday driver yes stick rules but when you have a fast reving hp monster it will slow you down

Automatics are more consistent. I still hold that a well driven stick car will be faster than a similar automatic car, assuming the driver is quick enough. However, the stick may be faster 1 in 5 times, the automatic will run a consistent number everytime.

Re: Are automatics really slower?

I want to know why you guys are going through six of these auto transmissions. (that always cracks me up when I read that) Why do you say they dont hold up when it seems the one common denominator in all the transmissions your busting up is you! I don't have this problem that's for sure!

If a L60 transmission let me down once (which it has not) I would rebuild /replace it no problem.

If it broke down the second time I might have it fixed again but I'd have to think about it, and consider other alternatives, maybe it really isnt worth it, whatever, etc.

But six times????? thats just funny! again the one common denominator is you and it doesnt seem fair to bad mouth the transmission. The fact is that if auto's were not so desireable they would not have made so many.

More people want them, so in that aspect they are better...and worth more!

Now let the flames begin, I'll pop some popcorn and kick back and watch.

peace

The manuals are more efficient in power transfer than the autos so, you'll see more power to the wheels with a manual.
Manuals shock the drivetrain and are less consistent than autos. Manuals are more suited to road racing.

Yea, what he said. I think you get about 15% drivetrain loss vs about 20% with an auto. At the track I dont think it would make as big a difference but on the street a manual tranny car vs an auto in the same type of car the manual will usually pull the automatic transmission car in a rolling race.

Re: Are automatics really slower?

well my a4 came with 3:23's not 3:08's, but thats an option. i have never been beat by a m6 that was similarly modded. autos will kill the m6 off the line, the m6 should trap a little higher mph. but when you go changing gears adding hp, autos will dominate the 1/4. m6 is ideal for road course though, and prolly more fun to drive. the auto is more friendly to the driveline also.

as far these a4 going out, the usual problem is wear in the valve body cousing fluid to bypass the valves. crank up about 300lbs line pressure use hardned steel pump, drive ect... all the usual perfomance upgrades.

Re: Are automatics really slower?

No 4th gen ever came with 3.08s. That info is just plain bogus.

Both types of trannies have their advantages. It depends on what you want and how you drive the car.

Only some v6 cars. One of my friends has a 96 RS a4 w/ 3.08 gears. It has GU4 in the rpo codes.
