Wasnt pretty . I guess it was bound to happen with a clutch that dont give and a 35 PD Fly spinning at 6300 RPM's
How do you miss 3rd and end up in 4th. End up in 1st or 5th and I'll atleast understand since its in the same general direction

O yeah and I was assuming Rich that you were talking about speed shifting on a fast car (like yours), not on any car like I guess you meant. I had no problem with some quick shifts (few power shifts though, they gave me more tire spin that reduced ET anyway) in the 12s and my few grazes with that 11 #, but I hope the T56 will allow for a decent shift at higher hp / lower ET, atleast for awhile.

If I ever find a car for sale I like (any 93+ TA for instance ) that happens to have an automatic, I would personally feel embarassed when I drove it until I got to do a swap to t56. I would rather the car be fast because of me than because of my setup. Others may be embarassed losing a race they should have won except for a bad shift, so I see how it goes either way. All about preference.

Speed shifting = right foot planted on the floor, stab the clutch, jam it into the next gear. The T56 is a great tranny, but this is something that it was not made for! On a relatively tame car the shock loads will be proportionately less, so you could proably get away with it for a long time. Tough on the clutch as well.

Unless your gonna get out and push the car yourself then every car is fast because of it's setup. Driver error is always a possibility but experience takes care of 95% of that so then your left with your HP/TQ and weight. I've owned two manual cars and for me it's too much like work. I loved them when your getting on a highway but in heavy stop and go traffic I hated them. If your gonna do road course type racing then you gotta get a manual. Heavy highway traveling should definately favor the manual as well.

But if your gonna spend any considerable time at the track and want the best ET for the least amount of $$ then automatic is the way to go. I'd rather win the 1/4 mile race and give all the credit to a Yank or TCI torque converter then lose the race but say I shifted perfectly that time. But that's just my personal preference.

I'm not embarrassed of my Automatic. I'm proud to have a A4 F-body. I'm gonna be real proud of it's success this season when my Nittos and SSF3500 goes in next month.

Both manual and automatics have thier pluses and minuses. Both are fun cars. Both come down to preference and what your plans/goals are. Enjoy your car regardless of what tranny you get. Just be sure to maximize either setup. If you get a M6 then get yourself a new shifter and clutch. If you get a A4 then get yourself a 3000 or better stall TC, tranny cooler and shift kit {optional}.

But for god sakes just have fun with it and don't worry what other people think about your setup. And as always keep all your racing at the track. The life you save may be your own.

Peace

thats what I figured, just thought I'd mention a 2 to 4 power shift would be 1 hell of a shift, haha

Rich, I agree with you on the speed shift. I consider that 'power shift', just a difference in semantics. Ive done a few power shifts, but like I mentioned before, i either lost traction or was worried about the wear it would cause, so as long as the T56 will take a normal fast shift, then it works for me

darrens99formul, I hope you didnt think I was taking a shot at the auto guys, in case it sounded that way. If i was building a drag car I would get an auto (all be it full manual valve body ) . And yes, to some extent a car will be fast regardless of who is driving it just bc of however much power it has. But if I build an auto car and run a great time, I wont get nearly as much satisfaction as if I shift my way to that time, again just preference. And I said embarassed bc I am a huge proponent of manual trannies, so the second people see me in an auto car, even temporarily, I will get so much sh*t talk, haha.

It sort of feels like work to me to let the auto do the shifting, bc then Im always trying to figure out what the car is gona do next, rather than just having a feel for it and putting it at the power/gear I want.

I orginally went looking for a 6 speed when I was shopping for my 4th gen.
To make a long story short, I installed 3.73 gears, a shift kit, and a TCI converter and I don,t miss not having a manual.
