Auburn to torsen what do I need?
I am going to change out my auburn carrier with a torsen. I have a 3;42 geared auburn with abs ring and I just got a 3:42 geared torsen with abs ring. I plain on putting the torsen unit in tomorrow. I just wanted to know if any other parts are needed other than, bearings, gaskets and gear oil. Also what gear oil is best for the torsen unit? Thanks
did you get the mated pinion to the 3.42 ring gear on that Torsen carrier ?
You can't mix parts from set to set. Your original 3.42 ring & pinion on that Torsen OR a replacement ring & pinion SET on that Torsen.
The better of the two would be your original 3.42 R & P on that Torsen as it would probably be close to original setup as you wouldn't be changing/removing/re-installing pinion.

O.K guys I got this done. I bought the torsen unit with 3.42 pinion and ring. I noticed my old gears were not all that great. So we used the gears from the torsen unit. It really was not that hard; we got lucky and the stock shims put the gears in the correct position. I believe we measured .006" backlash. The bearings looked good, I did not have access to a puller and press so I reused the old ones. The rear end is quiet now; with the old worn out auburn there was a wine at highway speeds. I am happy with the rear end now I just got to fix the slight miss that has been bothering me.
