Auburn rear Vs. LSD
Auburn rear Vs. LSD
I did a search and got nothing. I am getting ready to buy a Auburn clutchless rear with 3.42's off of a buddy that came out of his 96 SS. How are the different from LSD rears???
Sorry I am rear end stupid when it comes to that kind of stuff LOL and this one comes with LCA brackets, a cover, and has 22k miles and I am getting it dirt cheap.

Re: Auburn rear Vs. LSD
I'm not sure in what year(s) GM changed what diff's they used, but I *think* the Auburn was used mostly in the earlier (LT1) years, and the Zexel-Torsen was used more in LS1's
. I'm sorta basing this on the fact that I've got 2 Auburn diff's that came out of LT1 cars, and I've got a Torsen that came out of my '02
.
.....anyways, the Auburn works like a traditional "posi-traction" diff, where you've got springs pushing against the spider gears to try and hold them, and keep the axles turning at the same time/speed. The Torsen type has worm gears that slide back and forth and somehow lock the axles, but will allow 1 wheel to spin still?
.....basically, I don't understand how the _ _ _ _ the Torsen works, and I think I prefer the design of the Auburn
