A4 what fluid?? B&m or RP or reg ???

I was wondering what trans oil people are using in thier 4L60E?? I am having a race rebuild done on mine and of course want to use good oil, but I honestly dont know if there is any difference between using a syn oil or reg oil?

I have heard that B&M trick shift is supposed to be good, any opinoins?
and RP is supposed to good as well but I have heard of people having slippage with it in the 4L60E.

any advice would be appriciated.

Thanks.

i was gonna check out b&m trick shift, but on the bottle it clearly says not recommended for use in electronically controlled transmissions, dunno about synthetic because when i was rebuilding my trans that label just dampered my plan and i put regular back in it but good luck in your searches

Gary,

When Frank did mine he just told me to fill it with regular ATF that was designed for GM trans, sorry can't remember the designation. He said that there realy was no point in going with synthetic, plus you will need a case of fluid. I know that when I was looking I spent a little more then $2 a quart for a good dino oil, and synthetic stuff was more like $5 or more per quart. But hey if you want to spend the more then $40 extra for the fluid go for it. I am just saying, Frank said there wasn't a need for it, when I had mine built!

*** EDIT *** the type I was trying to remember was Dexron® I think it was Dexron®III, but not to sure I can look when I get home.

Re: A4 what fluid?? B&m or RP or reg ???

Trans is doing great, but remeber a while back when I was warned not to go with such a high stall and the OBD1 computer? I thought I could deal with it, but no way, I hit the "Stall Wall" and it didn't shift into 2nd and then went into limp home mode (3rd gear all the time even from a stop) untill I shut the car off and restarted it. I have since gotten the Computer fixed, I think! I got it done the weekend before x-mas so the car has been sitting in the carport since then. Weater has been too bad to try to bring it out and see if it is fixed! We'll see though! Bryan @ PCMFORLESS hooked me up with the fix, so I have faith that it will be fine.

BTW. I did get a new best after the trans was rebuilt and the stall put in, even with the computer not wanting to shift right because of the stall.
I ran a 13.2 @ 102 the last time I was at the track, sometime early December.
I used a buddies set of DR's and still spun off the line pretty good, 1.94 60'
the car went to shift into second hit the stall wall, jumped into limp mode, I then manually downshifted back to 2nd then manually upshifted to 3rd. But heck my previous best was with a 1.96 60' so it was all the DR's, and like I said it wasn't the most optimal run. I think with the way it felt and my delay in throwing it back into 2nd, I might hit 12's if I can get it to hook up nicely and it shifts right.

I also contaced Brian from PCM for less because I am planning to go with a 3000rpm stall and I am worried about the same thing as you, I asked hime if there was a way to fix the problem b4 I have one witht the stall wall, but I havent heard back from him yet....do you know if that can be done? or do I have to run the car with the stall and then find out??

Congrats on the times! 13.2 for a bolt on car with 2.73's is freakin amazing!
My best on the motor was a 13.4(street tires)2.1 60ft but @ 106 because the gears put me in the power band much better than the 2.73's once you
get some I'm sure you will be trapping 105-106mph.

Frank will have my Trans next week and I cant wait to get it back and try it out as soon as all the snow goes which will probably be in April.

Re: A4 what fluid?? B&m or RP or reg ???

That does suck, I would hate to have snow that long into the year! I am lucky to have a truck to drive in the winter this year though. For the past 2 years the firebird was my daily driver. It was funny I actually had to call out of work a couple times last year due to snow and my car getting stuck. I guess this next year will be fun, because now I might start doing some bigger mods like headers and stuff.

I am actually contemplating trying to go as fast as I can with the 2.73's. Everyone looks at my car and how it does at the track, and they are so surprized when I tell them I have the stock 2.73's. I think my goal will be try to hit between 12.7 - 12.8 on stock motor A4 w/2.73's, then rethink my next mods.

yeah it sucks big time but I save a sh*tload of cash driving my civic instaed of the Z lol

Have you dynoed the car?? I would be curious to see your numbers because doing those times on stock manifolds and 2.73 gears is amazing!

I'm using the regular ATF also. + running a B&M deep pan and B&M external trans super cooler for added protection.

Re: A4 what fluid?? B&m or RP or reg ???

I dont know what slippage is but I might be experiencing it,
I replaced pulled the pan and drained the tranny oil from the pan and
i added ROYAL PURPLE ATF SYNTETHIC and as soon as I left the driveway my
car would shift from 1st to 2nd and thats it until I pop it into Neutral and then pull it back into OD where it grabs and then shifts fine. Maybe I am experiencing Slippage. But when I have the money and time I will drain that and put regular Dexron ATF in the tranny...hope this helps a bit...

wow that definetly sounds like a problem with the RP you are the second person that I have heard of with the same complaint, I would wait to long to change it if I were you, reg ATF is cheap compared to a new trans.
