A4 Transmission Noise

I have a 1994 Z28 A4 And have a noise coming from around the torque converter area that sounds like its a belt chirping. It only does this when im in reverse or drive(1st gear) with my foot on the brake at about 550rpms, but goes away after 1000rpms and on into the other gears. It just started about 300 miles ago and is really starting to **** me off. I checked to make sure anything was rubbing and its not(that i know of), flexplate is not cracked.... and no loose bolts..........Also, it will not make the noise when im underneath it when im trying to figure out what it is.

Re: A4 Transmission Noise

I have a similar problem with wierd transmission noises. I recently had my 4l60E rebuilt by a local transmission shop, and at the same time i had them install a TCI 3500 super street fighter lock-up converter. Ever since the rebuild it makes a strange grinding/chirping sounds on part throttle upshifts. At first i thought it was the tires breaking traction, but i have come to realize that it is coming from inside the transmission because it even does it with the rear tires in the air. Another problem associated with this is that my torque converter doesnt always lock-up. It will work fine for a week or two, then it will stop locking and my shift lever does not hold the car in first when this happens. When the converter locks the first gear selection holds first untill i upshift. Im thinking its an electrical issue in the transmission, and it is causing too much line pressure on the shifts. I would like to know how to test the electrical components in the transmission. I would bring it back to the local transmission shop, but quite frankly i do not trust them anymore. Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post and thanks again for any tips you guys can give me.

Re: A4 Transmission Noise

Save yourself some money and take it back to tranny shop, tell them whats going on. They will know what to look for because they worked on your car. Make sure its tha same mechanic that worked on her before looks at the problem.

Have you been doing a few Brake torques?? Be Honest!!! It sounds like your foward drum band is burnt. It only gets applied when you are in first or reverse. They usually get burned up from Brake torqueing the car or while backing up not stopping the car completely and putting it into drive or first. The only way to fix it is pull the trans out and take it apart.

Re: A4 Transmission Noise

One more thing that may cause the band to prematurely fail is manual downshifting the car while cruising.
