A4 to T56 Conversion wiring pics? write ups?

there is a good write up on the physical conversion for us LT1 folks that i have been looking at..... But when it comes to the rewiring the write up is vague. So if any one can tell me what wires they rerouted, the location of those wires or have pics of the actual wires to reroute i would apprieciate it.

Re: A4 to T56 Conversion wiring pics? write ups?

I am in the process of doing the same myself. I spent a few hours tonight going over all the wiring and trying to figure out where I want to run everything.

I am trying to find a way to wire up my reverse lights the way the factory would have the first time. According to the gm manual I am using it goes out the passenger side under the computer across the motor and down to the tranny. The VSS should be easy as it's there to begin with. I am still debating on the CAGS. I do want the reverse lockout, and still looking at hooking that up. I have a wiring harness out of a parts car thats been monkied with... adding in that wire and pin shouldn't be too bad, but getting it wrapped with the others will be difficult.

The only thing I can't get worked out yet is how the hatch release is suppossed to work in a factory manual car. If you wire it up as written, you can pop the hatch at any time.

Have you figured out how or where you want to run things? I am also curious about the location of the shift boot on the floor. I am hoping it will locate such that I can cut the hole to include the existing automatic shift cable.... I was hoping there would be a picture, but no luck.

I installed my pedals today, and bummy mounted the master and all is good. I am going to finish up the install next friday when I get back from vacation. If you get yours done before me, let me know how it goes

The wiring really isn't bad on the LT1s. I did '94, '95, and '96 cars. If I remember correctly, the '94 had to have a pin swapped in the PCM so you could use the reverse lockout. The '96 (my car) was easy, just find the wires in the auto harness and wire them up.
Every doc I've read refers to swapping the VSS pigtail, that is only necessary if you are swapping in a '93 tranny (if I remember correctly), or you are doing a '93 car (the autos were different VSS).

Re: A4 to T56 Conversion wiring pics? write ups?

I had to change the vss pigtail on my 94 using a 94 t56. I think some years used the same connector for the auto and t56 and some used a different one. My parts manual shows that the 94-02 t56 uses part # 12101899 , the 96-02 auto uses the same part number and the 94-95 auto uses part # 12085498.

As stated above if you want reverse lockout to work on a 94 you will need to add a pin or swap one since there isn't a wire to that connector on the 94.
You will need to add a wire to position #6 on the blue connector and use that wire along with a power wire to the lockout solenoid. I moved the light green wire from position #7 on the black connector to position #6 on the blue connector and used it. I used the power wire from the reverse lights.

Connect the two largest wires from the six wire connector on the auto shifter to the clutch switch on the clutch pedal. I don't remember the wire colors but I think they are the top two wires on the connector.

Run the reverse light wires from the six wire connector to the reverse light switch on the passenger side of the trans. I drilled a small hole in front to the shifter boot and used a rubber grommet. I think the wires are the two middle ones on the six wire connector. I spliced into the hot wire and used that for the reverse lockout too.

I just connected the hatch wires together. I think the stock T56 used the emergency brake lever switch for these wires. You could probably figure out a way to hook them into that switch if you wanted to. As noted above if you splice the wires together the hatch release will work any time you press the button.

Re: A4 to T56 Conversion wiring pics? write ups?

i have done a few of these one on a 94 and one on a 95 that had a 97' tranny at the time of swap and now has an M29 ('93) and i just followed the wiring in that write up and everything worked perfectly minus the cruse.. never got that one worked out.. just havent taken the time (never worked on the 95' before the swap).. the CAGS you dont even have too mess with no need to even run wires too it and on the reverse lockout a good solution would be too wire it into your brake lights. I myself just took the simple route and wired up a toggle switch mounted near the cig ligher and that works great for me.. i didnt really need it but i put it there too make it easy for my wife if she wishes too use it but as far as back up lights and hatch and all that stuff just get all the right pigtails and follow that write up and you will be all set. Its a pretty easy deal and have no regreats on eather of mine. if you have anymore questions you should go over too LS1tech and go too the manual trans. section and there is a BIG sticky about nothing but this that is filled with great info and write ups.. Good luck.. you wont be sorry you did it
