A4 slipping badly in 3rd/4th

This is in a '98 vette...not getting any help on corvette forum and figured i'd get more info here.

May have nothing to do with current issue...tranny pan was leaking fluid slowly and ~6 months ago I added a little over 1/4 quart to correct some problems (converter had toruble unlocking and when cruising in 4th gear when I went ot accelerate the engine would rev about 500rpm before the car would start to move). After adding some fluid everything was happy, and transmission worked like new.

Two weeks ago, I began to notice that in 4th gear, when applying moderate amounts of throttle the engine would rev a big (~500 rpm) before the transmission would grab. Over the next couple days, this problem got worse to the point where in 4th gear I can't really accelerate at all, and have to give it enough gas to downshift if i really want to go anywhere. Engine will rev from 1,500 rpm when cruising up to about 4,000-4,500 rpm before the transmission suddenly grabs and the rpms drop back down to about 2,000-2,500 and then the car will accelerate.

Yesterday I dropped the pan. Fluid smelled burnt and was grey in color. I put in a new filter, filled up the pan, then went through the fill procedure (went through each gear with engine running, pausing ~3 seconds in each gear, then back to park, and added fluid with engine running until it began to dribble out the fill hole). Took it for a drive...it did improve some but it is still slipping (cruising @ 1,500 rpm, if i give it gas it will rev to about 2,500-3,000 before grabbing). I also noticed it downshifted easier.

There's 108,000 miles on it. Is it possible this can be remedied without a complete rebuild?

Forget about it. The 3/4 clutch pack is toast. Theres likely double the clearance in the pack and the seals aren't doing thier job because theyre old and hard, which is likely what caused the clutch damage to start. Break out the check book.

If adding fluid previously corrected it then likley it was slipping before, The damage was done and has continued to deteriorate, I agree the 3-4 set is toast and you do need a rebuild
