A4 lags when turning left

My tranny will sortof get stuck between gears if I turn a sharp right, but is fine straight and during leftturns.

I'm thinking this has to be something maybe filter or valve body realted? Anybody got any idea what I should be looking for?

It's strong except for that hard right turn, then it starts searching for gears.

fluid is good according to the stick, no leaks.

i have noticed that the cap on the stick doesn't fit tightly in the tube. it stays put but not tightly. could this be a problem?

I have seen this a few times over the years, add a 1/2 quart of fluid. If this solves the problem, make a new full line on the dipstick. Overfilling by a 1/2 quart of fluid will not do any harm.

will do.

with the E4OD what symptoms have you seen? I have that tranny in my truck and it's always shifted unusually hard at low throttle. not extreme, but harder than what i'd call 'normal'. i just chalked it up to ford trying to counteract the occasional premature wearing of that tranny over the years - mine's a '96.

well the low fluild wont cause that , most people have the opposite complaint with the E4OD shifting sloppy , The dipstick being wrong will cause it to jumo out of gear intermitantley and sliding shifts due to ariation , I actually suggest every E4OD owner over fill by at least three quarts , We made a pan with a clear guage on it and you dont want to know how little fuild is in a E40D pan running in gear The one we had was a van and though the stick said it was full in park running there was less that 1 1/2 inch of fluld from bottom of pan took three quarts just to get it 3/4 way up probably could add more I have heard people say up to five quarts past full is fine and brings them to the rail , those pans will hold alot of fluild

The Ford AXOD is another transmission that benefits from being overfull. Ideal fluid level in most transmissions is at the "pan rail" when warm and in gear. Yes, the accurate level is "in gear". This was once the way to check the fluid level in an automatic transmission many years ago, but with safety issues being what they are....... we are not capable of having someone in the drivers seat put on the brake, while we check the fluid level (and you know how many of us have had our vehicles run us over when checking the fluid level in drive......)

Yes thats why when one of our customers calls and says there a little over by like a quart i generally tell them its fine that way. But I definatley would never tell them to check it is drive ,not because its a bad idea but there are more obvious reasons not to tell anyone to do that.

interesting.

this '96 runs and shifts different from any 351 / E4OD equipped ford I've ever had (had about 5). the engine is more linear but not quite as powerful down low and the tranny shifts completely different, no lag between gears; almost a little too snappy for my tastes, but i'm used to the others I've had. i don't know if it's just different programming from obdi to obdii or what, but this '96 is so different from any other EFI ford I've ever driven. took me a while to get used to it and recognize its 'improvements'; at first i only really noticed the things that bugged me about it.

i had one high rpm shift into second today in my car that was sloppy. first time that's ever happened. gonna add 1/2 quart - maybe even 3/4 tomorrow and see if it helps.

sounds like a plan,
and the firms shifts are good not a bad thing they will improve clutch life and reduce heat

yeah it's just that sometimes it's "thud!" if I back off or let off the gas right before it shifts. thanks for the info.
