Re: 99 a4 stock gears

The consensus has always been 3.73 gears perform best for an A4 car, but it depends on what else has been done to it which gear you should go with.

Usually, the cars lose traction in 1st then bog a little in 2nd because of the too low first gear and wide 1-2 gear ratio, so I'm not sure what is going on with yours. These trannies aren't set up very well for a drag race. Then if you go with a lower gear and a converter, you deal with traction problems off the line and still have the less-than-ideal 1-2 shift, although it will be much better since the lower gear ratio will help and the converter will soak some of it up.

Look for the RPO codes mentioned in the post above. GU2 or GU5. The codes are on the service parts label in your glove box.

Re: 99 a4 stock gears

2000 @ 80 looks like 2.73s'.

My 3.23s' are 1800 @ 60,2100 @ 70,2400 @ 80.
RPMs were read off a ScanGaugeII and MPH was indicated by a GPS unit.
Can't go by factory tach as they typically indicate too high and who knows how accurate your speedo is.
