1) 7-5/8 inches
2) Probably be better off getting a new unit, or if you don't mind used, just picking up a whole new rear from a salvage yard.
3) Auburn Differential (clutch/spring type, as opposed to the LS1 rears which use Zex-Torsens, a worm gear type).
4) Factory M6 gears for your year should be 3.23. I think the LS1 cars were the only ones with 3.42s stock. Check your RPO codes, it'll be GU5 I believe.

I'm pretty sure all 4th gens with the M6 had 3.42 gears.

3.23 were for A4's with the GU5 (i think its Gu5 at least) rpo code.
3.42's were standard for m6's

Thanks GTP and Toby, couldn't recall if the 3.42s were available with the LT1s.

No, 3.23's were stock with M6's, 3.42's were the GU6 option, the performance axle option.

3.42's were standard for m6's. Perhaps there was a year where that was not the case (93s?), but for the rest of the V8 M6's it should be 3.42... 94+ im quite sure of.

hey i am willing to sell you my rear from my 2000 Z28 M6. only has 64k on the rear. i am getting a new rear in the next few weeks. So i will have no use for it. all you have to do is change the backing plates, so you can mount your brakes to it. I will sell it kindof cheap if you let me keep the backing plate which are of no use to you. PM me if your interested.
